re: block ident

Darren, on the right side of the distributor at the rear of the block is a 7 digit number eg: 3970014, 3970010.

this is the number you want. It will tell you what year it was from and what cars or trucks it was install in.

I have a book that will tell . let me know and i'll look it up.

This was just discussed a few days ago. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...threadid=50764 Go here- http://www.teufert.net/sbchevy/sbchevy.htm I think it's a '79 350, so I'd start there. Search until you find TJB, and it'll tell you the info.

I realized I gave the wrong numbers. I'll have to call the guy back, and get the numbers off the rear of the motor.
Thanks jacquesdean.
Thanks for the help guys.

Those 3070010 and 3970014 will only give you so much info over a board range of years.

3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4
3970014....350...70-76...2 or 4

The Suffix TJB is more helpful in determing what year and motor you have.

1973 TJB 350 conv.cab 160HP 4BBl C0 to 2500
1979 TJB 350 frwd cab, a/t L LS9 165HP C-30 & 3500

Some of the Engine Suffix letter code combinations were used a number of times. For example, in 1974 the suffix code "CMR" was used on three different vehicle models with the same engine and transmission combinations. "CMR" was again used in '78 with a Corvette and a different engine/transmission combination. You would need to look at the block casting date to know which year the block was made to narrow down the possibilities. Relying solely on the suffix code to identify the original use of the block can be misleading. You need to look at ALL of the casting identifiers before making your determination.

Those smaller numbers you read in the same pad area at front passenger head is part of the serial number of the vehicle it came out of. GM stamped those in some years also.

I agree, Rod. You must look at all of the numbers. I just had the same problem trying to figure out what engine was in the truck I bought. Between the addy's I sent and the other info you've received, finding out what the block actually came from should be (somewhat) easy. We're always here, though......

Here are more numbers. (To go along with the ones I posted at the top of the thread)

3970010

# by Distributer is 1173 (Year?)

I'm told it is a 350. And I belive it is.

Any more details / info would be helpful.

Thanks!
Darren
