Gas tank question

I assume the two small vents coming off this tank are for the ECE system. Can I just run a vented gas cap and close them off? What is the 3rd nipple for?

Mine is a 68 so I don't have a charcole canister. So in my case the 2 small ones are capped with hose and plugs, and the larger one connects to the vent tube on the fill pipe. My gas cap is the oem type.

I thought this tank was clean based off of the gas that I had poured out of it but apparently it is not. I got the sending unit out yesterday and it is going to need to be cleaned. I may just replace it due to cost. Anyone replaced their burb tank lately> If so what did you use?

I used the steel OEM style tank with the straps and hooks.
Can't remember which vendor I got it from, but they are all pretty much the same.

I do know that you should wear leather gloves while putting the tank in, since the edges are are freakin sharp! I slashed my hand really bad putting my tank in.

I used one from lmc. Good quality and price. Only issue I had was the strap kit only came with two j hooks. I just went to ace and got a couple more. So check before you start in case yours was like mine. I agree make sure you have gloves cause the edges were sharp.

Kevin, I just installed a tank from LMC into the 71 burb and had no issues with it. I just used the original straps and sending unit on mine. The only difference is the filler neck is different on the tank from LMC and you will need to pick up some filler neck hose. The problem is no one carries the right size (in tyler anyway). I ended up taking the tank into Auto Zone and finding a coolant hose that was the right size that had a long straight piece in it to use.

Coolant hoses for fuel is a no no.
They are just not built for petrol based liquids, and will indeed rot out rather quickly.

The correct hose can be still found, but you have to get it from an industrial hose supplier. I found that the size of hose for our tanks, is a popular size for marine applications.

The pictures below are what I have always used, and fits perfectly on the inlet pipe of the tank and the fill tube attached to the body.

I found some of the hose vectorit has shown above at the Napa on Erwin. The new ethanol gas is very corrosive(??sp) so you might want to pic up some of the hose from Napa. Rick is the guy who hooked me up. OH, it ain't cheap.

Well the tank is toast. I thought by the looks of the gas coming out it would be fine. I took the sending unit out I got worried by what I saw but it did not look that bad. I took it to the radiator shop and the tanked it over night and it did not clean up good enough to not be sealed. The price to clean and seal the tank is as much as a new tank kit with sending unit, staps, etc. so that is the route I am going to take. I am looking at classic parts complete kit for $199. Anyone bought this kit? I just personally do not like LMC.

If you get the OEM steel type, I have never seen anyone complain about quality from any of the vendors here on the board.

Check with the board vendors to see if they can get you a better deal?
