Master Brake Booster

I have been shopping around for a disc brake setup for my '49. After comparing a few of them I decided to go with the CPP's 5 bolt brake kit (http://www.classicperform.com/Store/...s/4754CBK5.htm). I decided not to go with the kit that includes the booster for 2 reasons (I will be frame mounting my booster):

1). I was going to look for a Corvette or Mustang II booster locally first and then just pick up the frame mounting piece from CPP.

2). If I wanted to go pick up the booster from CPP with the pedal mount already installed, it would still be cheaper picking them up separately, then buying the whole kit. (Or am I missing something?)

My question is has anyone gone with trying to pickup their own booster? Unfortunately the only searching I can do right now is calling the local junkyards because I am not living where the truck is anymore. I am just trying to get a rough idea of what a booster runs for and then take on another $60 for the bracket. Just trying to figure out with myself if I would rather just spend the extra on the booster and dodge the possibly headaches of searching for my own.

If you're frame mounting the booster, make sure you don't buy a large diameter unit. A couple of reasons to go small are (1) fitting up with the MC and bracket where there is limited space up against the frame. (2) Exhaust system clearance. There are small diameter double diaphragm units that are moderately priced and give you all the advantages of a larger booster.

Thanks for the input.

I was looking at the small diameter unit as I had read about those issues. I guess I am trying to figure out if it is worth me looking for one locally out of the yard. Corvette and Mustang II I was told are the smaller diameter units. Anything else?

reman'd vette boosters are like $90ish so it really seems like the kit is the way to go. Then you have to get the proportioning valve

I have wondered the same thing myself. I want to know the best and most affordable setup. I would like to keep drum brakes all around then eventually get discs up front. What do y'all recommend for this.

Well you can get the booster without the proportioning value because you are running a drum/drum setup. Once you upgrade to disc you will need to buy a proportioning value.

What your asking those - the best and most affordable setup differs among people. Most affordable would be going to the yard and piecing it together, but that would be a headache for some.

Look over at Classic Perform.com to get an idea first to see what your looking at.

I looked at the manf. brackets, etc. and decided to make my own. I had the truck MC, bought a 9" hot rod booster and fabbed the rest. Bolts to the stock location. I radiused the booster support to match the booster. I wanted to keep the stock pedal assy. Haven't driven it yet but seem to work ok sitting and when tested with vacuum from another running engine. Also allowed me to place it a little further back and tighter to the frame. Note that the coils in the pic with the prop. valve are wrong. With them vertical it is almost impossible to bleed out the air pockets. I went back and rotated them 90 degrees, no place to trap air.

I think the most important aspect of the system is going to be the check valves since the mC is so low.

If you are going all disc, then it might be a simple wilwood proprotion valve??
I am looking for all may brake parts now too, and want a complete list.
I will look at your links and post back

At the moment I am doing disc/drum for now until I upgrade the rear. On our '70 Challenge we have a simple wilwood proportion value.

Again I am not too familiar with the scenario here with the MC sitting so low.

What system were you looking at?

i frame mounted a 2003 mustang hydroboost, compact and plenty of boost.
self fabricated braket using the stock swing arm and pedal.
total cost was $100 not including new brake lines and check valves.
2nd pic is the remote reservoir

Were did the remote res come from? I used one off a VW but the lines always leak.

What was the cost of running the pressure lines to the power steering pump?

No idea. I had quit counting at that point. I don't remember it costing that much more than the power steering by itself.

nissan quest or mercury villager has the same size rubber inserts in the mc.
i pulled the tank off and put the inserts in.
added 2- teflon lined, 1/2 lines to mount the remote 3' away from the mc.
not my idea... found it on the factory five forum, they use the same mc.
