230 l6 questions
Alright well ive been thinking about rebuilding my 230 straight six but im not to familiar with it, around how much money would it take to rebuild it as a performance engine or just a regular engine, another thing is what are the pros and cons to having a two or three carburetor intake manifold, and how good will headers help seeing as cylinders (2 and 3) and (4 and 5) share the same port?

I just had my 250 rebuilt. Machined the deck till it cleaned up ~ .010 Bored the cylinders @ .030 over. Valve Seats replaced along with new guides. Rods were reconditioned and new flat top pistons from a 307 were used. All of the gaskets and rod and main bearings with cam bearings installed. I also used a comp cam with a moderate grind. I did the complete dissassembly and reassembly. I ported the head before reassembling. Since I did all of the labor except fitting and rods and installing the cam bearings I saved about $300. With that said I spent $1250. Hope this helps.

Thanks, well rite now im still saving up money rite now i don't know weather to go towards fixing up the body first or rebuilding the engine, the engine runs pretty good (well in my opinion), im not really sure how those engines are suppose to be when they are working properly , it just has a knock that comes and goes which is my only concern but one of the other members said that some times they might knock even after rebuild, and around how much hp do you think you get out of the engine with the rebuild and the cam? and yes id appreciate that very much.

Tony, there are many threads here about the 230-292, just do some searching and reading.
The 230/250 is a great engine, good torque, but the head limits it for efficiency and power. You also don't have the parts choices you have with a small block, and its actually more expensive to modify or hotrod a 6 compared to the SBC. You can improve it significantly the 230/250 with HEI ignition, headers, mild cam, and aftermarket intake and newer carb like a small 4 bbl. ton of info over at Inliners.org

I want to overhaul my 67 GMC 250 L6 myself because all the rings have gone bad, but was wondering whether or not I could replace the main bearings without pulling the motor because I don't have the equipment to so I would have to have that done somewhere else. I've heard both I can and cannot from people I know so I wanted to make sure before I start tearing it down.
