Question 1971 Grill Paint ,What to Use?

Hello,
I have an alum grill surround that the black paint around the headlight buckets is, well tired..
What paint will have the best chance of lasting that come in a spraybomb?

Was thinking engine paint might be a good choice, if I can fine flat black..

Is it flat black.. when new?

Thanks for any help,ideas..
This is a driver, not a show car.. just want it to look good..

Re: 1971 Grill Paint ,What to Use?

I just did mine and I used etch primer and followed that with sem satin black (rattle can). It looks decent... and with the etch (zinc chromate) primer it will stick to the aluminum pretty well. Be sure to scuff the painted areas with 600 or scotch-brite pad so the primer can get a hold better.

The polishing was much more work than the paint!

lake anna - is the bottom section that you have painted black normally silver (paint)? Are you choosing to paint it black to match a black truck perhaps? Nice job - just curious about that lower black section - I can certainly be mistaken about what color that normally is, but thought silver.
Thanks!

I think it looks better black and is how the factory would have done it except to save a buck. It's just a filler down there and the black paint makes it disappear while giving better accent to the surround itself. It makes the surround maintain a uniform dimension all the way around.
