68 GMC original style winshield washer pump.

fyi: I just bought a new original style windshield washer pump for my 68 GMC and it doesn't fit the original motor mounting holes. The vendors don't mention that there are different motors and I didn't know there were either. Both are Delco motors but have different numbers on them.

The mounting holes on the new pump are farther apart than the original pump. Also, my original motor has a metal star pump actuator (not sure what it's called) that's taller and the 69 Chevy has a nylon star one.

Be sure and measure yours if you ever have to replace it.

These are approximatel measurements.

68 GMC washer pump holes are app. 3 and 7/8 inches apart and the new one (similar to the one on my 69 Chevy) app. 4 and 7/8 inches apart.

I ran into that problem on my '67. Seems '67 and early '68 use a different wiper motor than '69-up. I got lucky and found an NOS washer pump repair kit (part #4914074) but good luck finding another one. Your best bet might be to replace the wiper motor with the '69-up style and use the newer pump. As far as I know the wiper motors interchange.

Good thing to know for others that have these trucks. I wasn't aware of the 67's and early 68's having a different motor. I did have another motor from my 69 that I'm using though.

I actually bought a kit first (cap and rubber valves) but this Texas heat had made the plastic brittle on the old pump and basically just fell apart.

I'm going to keep the old motor as a spare and probably mount a new style washer motor in it if I need to.

Re: 68 GMC original style winshield washer pump.

What a coincidence! I was doing the same thing today on my '67 and had the same problem with the part I got from Rock Auto. The new one is too long. I still have a remote pump but I wanted to change back to stock.

Do you have pics of how the washer hoses are routed in case I get another pump that will fit?

Thanks

Re: 68 GMC original style winshield washer pump.

Thanks-I read quite a few posts last night and most advised against using the stock pumps as they are apparently not reliable and can leak etc. What do you think?
