Do I need to put sealant on the windshield when I reinstall it with the new rubber? If so, what do I use and where do I put it?

I could not get the window on my 72 gmc to seal. I had the glass shop seal it. They sealed between the gasket and the window frame. They told me the frame has drain holes that become clogged or damaged (I do not know if this is true or not). I do not know what they used but it worked, I have not had a leak for 5+ years.

Supposedly it is not needed. The rubber fits tight and is difficult to put in, so depending on the condition of the metal around your window you should be okay.

The first time we installed it the window got broken in the upper passenger side do to the tight fit. We used 3M window sealer and it made a mess.

The second window went in easier with no sealant, and it hasnt leaked yet.

Hope this helps. Just be sure to work the window and rubber in slowly and take your time.

I'm going the "let the gasket soak in the sun for a while and use the string and soapy water" method and was wondering if I needed "goop" Thinks I have my answer.

i got a friend at a body shop who told me to use that brown gasket junk to seal the windshield the downsides are ya gotta be careful not to get stuff on the paint as its hard to get off and the only way youll ever get that gasket off again is to mangle it SO next windshield youll have to get another gasket

Just put the front and rear windshield in last night. I used Go Jo hand cleaner for lube. The old lady and me got both installed in 20 miniutes. with the rope trick.

Go jo is your friend. and cleaned the gasket real nice.

dont forget the top goes in first, if you put the bottom in first you will break off the corner.

Tuck, Hey thanks for the tip. I have done my rear window...it is a piece of cake...took 5 minutes tops. I was reluctant to try the front. Can you just insert the entire top edge by sliding it up the front of the cab since the hole is bigger on the bottom or do you insert one corner first and start the rope work on top? Yu da man!

Its top corner in them the other sides top corner. rope is centered on the top. start pulling one side while someone puts pressure on it from the outside. I do half the top then down one side, then half the top down one side then the bottom.

Hey PA guy, how far are you from Springdale? I will be out that way in a week or so. If your close I will bring the rope.

my dad owns a glass shop in phoenix and i think they put a cocking sealant between the window frame and the rubbers

you also have to really bang the window in there too get the seal down, and it takes a lot of force to break a windshield

The factory manual says to put some sealant on (in between) the top corners of the front windshield. Like maybe a 6" bead out from each corner.
The guys who put mine in said to leave it alone for awhile and let everything settle.
If you seal it when you first install it, the sealant could take a "set" and then crack the glass later on.
Don't know if this is right. Just telling you what I was told.
No sealant on mine yet - and no leaks.
