I figured cause almost everything is off the truck but cab might as well pull it! So I wanna clean frame and paint it. Whats the best way budget wise? I figure wire wheel and time! So what all do you advise removing to get clean as possible and any certain wire wheels you recomm? Also what about time frame to clean and paint frame? Thanks for any advice up front! Brandon

When I did mine, I unbolted the front crossmember, removed the rear trailing arms and axle. I then hit the heaviest spots with a wire wheel to remove any scale. Once I had some of the small things fixed, like a spring perch that was full of holes, I sand blasted the entire frame in the driveway. I then reworked the trailing arms as mine were expanding due to the rust between the halves. cleaned them inside and out with the sandblaster and welded new strips of metal down the middle on both halves. They are quite robust at this point! When I did mine I primed and painted with Rust-O-Leum and I would never use that again, it has worked ok but not all that good, chips easily and then rusts again. Did the prep work nights during the week, used wire wheel Friday night and some sat morning and then used the rented sandblaster the rest of saturday. Finished sandblasting sunday morning and prepped for paint before lunch. Painted Sunday after lunch and let dry in the summer heat the rest of the day. Monday evening started reassembly. I liked the sandblasting as I thought it did a better job removing some of the harder scaly rust. The wire brush has a tendency to just polish it and not remove it. Plus the sandblasting leaves a uniform rough finish for paint where the wire wheels could polish the metal too much and lead to adhesion problems.

I sand blasted mine and used POR-15. It is as hard as beavers teeth.

I reccomend the twisted Dewalt wire wheels for your angle grinder. Get both the cup and the flatter wheel for different areas. They are about $15 each. Then for do it yourself paint I don't think you can beat Eastwoods extreme chassis primer and extreme chassis black. Eastwoods is always having a sale and you can get the primer for $10 a can and the paint for $15 a can. You will need about 4 or 5 cans each. So for about $165 you can get the job done and done well.

So how messy was blasting in drive way? Also what media did you use and how much media did you use? I could borrow a small blaster like harbor freight has but wonder how long it would take using it. Wish I could afford to take to blaster but I can't afford that right now.

Go get yourself some leveling sand from Lowes, its like $2.50 for a 50lb bag. I spread the sand out on a tarp and let it dry in the sun, raking it occasionally. I then sift it with a kitchen sifter my wife had. The sand does a great job of removing rust and is fine enough after you dry and sift it that it does not clog my $129 Tractor Supply 100lb pressure blaster. If you can afford the blaster and don't mind a little work it is a good investment.

Go get the several of the cheapest $1 oven cleaner cans (please use facemask, hand protection), spray down the frame, power wash it off (again protect your eyes and skin), wire wheel any scale, and por15....

hummm some ideas wish i knew some local with bigger pressure pot blaster to use. oven cleaner is a decent idea but messy as well and not big fan of por-15 on frames it not bullet proof and neither is powder coat. With black paint i can touch up easily. Keep ideas coming guys.

with the oven cleaner then powerwash followed by wire wheel. I use a wheel on some and a cup on the flat sides and insides.

For cheap, good paint I use the rustoleum primer and hammered finish paint. It's proven to be very durable and you can find it for under $5 a can at walmart...

We used silica sand, put down a huge tarp, got a few 50# bags, and kept sweeping it up and shoveling it back in. I think we used an old window screen to keep any big chunks of debris out. We have a small pressure pot that works great but for this we rented a larger blaster and industrial trailer type compressor. Our home compressor would just not put out the CFM it required for the larger blaster. Since we rented the stuff Saturday and kept it until Monday we didn't really pay for Sunday. We didn't pay for rental when the business was not open and there was a small fee depending on how many hours you put on the compressor. I think the 12 volt hour meter had an intermittent connection... Got the sand from the local Menards, that's been several years ago so I don't remember the price but I don't remember it being very expensive. We also have a rural gravel driveway and did the bottom of the cab and box at the same time. We tried to plan it so that we had everything ready and didn't have to spend time messing with stuff. I had my entire frame, crossmember, front a arms, and trailing arms blasted and powder coated for about $400 by a local shop. Totally worth it to me. Sandblasting is fun but messy and a pain outside a cabinet unless you have lots of space and the right equipment.

I would totally get that done if I could find a deal like that around here. I found a small guy just getting started that would charge 150 for just blasting the frame...the other estimates from shops were 500-750 for just blasting the frame.

Got a quote today $200-$300 to do complete frame,axle etc. He told me it's $100 hour and more grease etc I get off before it comes there brings time blasting down and figures how they work his quote is reasonable and more lower end $200-$250 he thinks. Think this is reasonable and better then spending week cleaning prepping etc?

YES!!!....Do it!!!!.....I'd let them shoot the primer too, and if you have the means, you paint the chassis with whatever chassis paint you want!....BTW....as a comparison...touch bases with member 'brn agn' we had a chassis and associated parts blasted over in your area and can't remember what we paid....

Sounds like a good price. I got an quote of $600-700 to blast and powder coat, seemed reasonable. They said remove everything that unbolts before bringing it in. I havent decided yet because I am sure I will scratch the pcoat and make many changes that require welding on the frame so I may just paint mine...

For the time, mess, and aggrivation I would definately pay $250 to have it blasted!

Let the pros do it for that price, and remember that this is the base for everything else you are going to do and you will scuff it up so paint it with something you can touch up....

Just a couple of days ago we blasted a SWB frame in my driveway. Pics of the result are in the Midwest/ Missouri, thread Project 67 area of the board. Made a mess of course that is expected with flying sand. Borrowed a small blaster and used 5 bags of sand and it took about 4 hrs with a 18 CFM compressor. We found you need a constant flow in the pot between 90-100 lbs to work properly. 5 Bags ($4.50 per) n 4-5 hrs of work. Pressure washed the frame before the process to remove the grease had to have helped. Plan on using a etching primer and paint on top. Jegs n others have etching primer for around 65-75 a gallon in black and some Rustoloem or similar top coat is what I am planning. Por 15 runs the cost up considerably then your talking $185 (primer, cleaner, top coat) or so in materials. But sometimes you get what you pay for too. Depends on what your going to do with the truck when your finished. Drive it or show it on a trailer.
