Rivet shortage

I've parted out a lot of trucks over the years but this is the first one I've found where ALL the spring hangers and the mid mount support were
supported by bolts and not by rivets. Its an 85 K30 CUCV and I'm sure no one was that bored to have replaced all the the spring hangers and bracing.
The only riverts on the truck are for the engine cradle. Must have ran out of rivets that day and used bolts, Keith?

Re: Rivet shortage

Wow that is definitely interesting. Believe it or not I was thinking about cutting out the rivets and putting in bolts so I could sandblast every nook and cranny before I get the frame coated. But way to much work and I dont want to mess with the structural integrity of the frame.

Mine have been bolted on for 26 years and 199,000 miles with no issues (one of seven or eight trucks we did this way), so I don't think you'll hurt the structural integrity any.

Re: Rivet shortage

I wish mine had been bolted in to start with. just spent two days knocking out rivets to swap all my spring hangers over from my 4wd frame to my new 2wd one.

Re: Rivet shortage

Looks like a repair to me; they may have put the hanger in the wrong location initially, and then after it was past the rivet station they had to cut the rivets out and bolt the hanger in the correct spot. Said differently, the approved repair procedure was to replace any defective rivets with a 3/8" bolt - and the only explanation for having all the rivets replaced would be because the hanger had to be moved.

Additionally, the military trucks were few(er) and farther between the regular trucks (like maybe one out of every 12), plus there was a lot more complexity (so folks were not as happy to see them coming), so they were easy to mess up. That's another data point that would suggest a build error.

As an aside, because I knew I was going to be lowering my truck by moving the hangers; when my truck was built I tried to persuade the workers to bolt all my hangers on rather than rivet. No luck on that one....

But how about the mid mount under the rear of the cab? That also has rivets.
Thanks for your answer, parting this truck out anyway, little easier with the bolts!

Re: Rivet shortage

I parted out a 87 suburban 4x4 and it was the same way, all bolts except the engine cradle.

Re: Rivet shortage
