They don't have to be welded (the factory doesn't do it), but it's a good idea so it doesn't vibrate loose. If you get it welded, be sure to set the height first, and also be sure you remove the oil pressure spring before welding (heat will ruin the spring).

It doesnt get that hot when its tacked. Im not sure but you might be able to get some locktight and use that when it having the right distance from the bottom of the oil pan. I havent done it or have heard of it being done like that so Im not sure how good of an idea it is.

Make double sure you weld it in after you get it set.
You can also braze it in.Lose the spring before you do this or your oil pressure will be zip when you fire it up. I put one in the other day that was VERY tight going in. I had to heat up the pump body and put the pick up tube in some dry ice and it was still tight going in. A day or two later I removed the base to re-install the spring and found the pick up rather loose. It would turn in the pump with very little effort. So much for a interference fit with that pick-up. Melling makes a few bolt-on pick ups now for guys out there with no welding shop nearby. There is no such thing as a tack-welder BTW. The pump pick-up needs to be tacked-in as opposed to fully welded. The same machine is used for both. Good luck, Mike |

SES-3-60-08-005 oil pump SUM-G3500P oil pan Or is summits own products not worth it thanks for the feedback i have to decide on what to do. and unfortunatley i dont have alot of cash but still want to get good items. |

I'd rather spend the money on Melling and knwoing what parts you're getting by who rather than Summit's. Something critical like this it's best to spend the $$$.

A little JB Weld might do the trick to hold the pick-up in place. That is what I was going to use. JB Weld is pretty strong. It has 5000 psi tensile strength. Average stick weld is 70000 psi but it's only to hold tube in place.

I could be wrong but Im pretty sure that the summit oil pumps are really melling oil pumps with a summit number. They do that alot with there stuff its not really that summit has a brand but they buy other brands and have there name and stuff on them. I would call them or ask over in the Engine and drivetrain fourm.

Agreed. Summit pumps are made by Melling. I have a Summit high volume oil pump kit on my truck. It is the Melling M55HV pump.
