a rather dumb power vs manual steering question...

If one wanted to convert from a 3-on-the-tree + non-power steering setup - TO - an auto trans (column shift) and power steering....

Would I just need find:
1) an auto column (preferably tilt!)
2) power steering box/hoses
3) double groove pulleys
and of course the trans itself, but that's easy

What other things might I be missing off the top of my head on this upgrade? Mounting considerations/differences between a manual trans setup vs. auto column shift?

There's a sweet little shortwide on ebay - a nice cheyenne with almost no options - already getting bid up a little too rich for my blood, but the idea begged the above questions. (this truck has no power steering, brakes, and a 3 on the tree, but the body is near perfect.... a completely stripped down, low optioned, good body cheyenne shorty). And I got to thinking that if it sold for a reasonable price due to the low options, then I could use that money to do the upgrades i'd like to do on my own (ps, p 4w disk, od trans, etc) and still have the body side of the picture done before i even start.

This master plan came crashing down when I read that it has no title, just bill of sale in that state. Drives me nuts. I know that some states won't issue them for older trucks, and if you never, ever move from that state, well it's just fine, but if you move around a lot like me, there is no way I could buy something like that - would be screwed in most of the states I move to. Really, really wish states could get on the same sheet of music and either all do it or not do it for older vehicles, but crimeny... people move a lot more often these days between states. Just sayin! So, not getting this truck, unfortunately, but I did want to discuss the above power steering + auto trans upgrade combo anyway - wanted to see if there were any specific issues/concerns when doing both simultaneously.

Wow, never seen a cheyenne with so few options. My base model 72 custom is loaded compared to that. On one hand this truck is more collectable due to the unusual nature but on the other its missing desirable options. I'd be scared without a title also when paying that much.

As for adding the items, I know 72's had some different carb/intake small components (vaccuum components, and sensors/switches) compared to prior years. There may be some differences in these depending on whether auto or manual but I'm not sure. Also 67's do not have a frame dimple to accept later power steering gearboxes.

That looks like a great truck, in the pictures anyway.

I bought my truck from a no title state (Georgia) and all you need to do in this situation here (Oklahoma) is take a notorized bill of sale to the tag office where they will check the vin and tag registration records and poof you get a title in the mail. I had one problem though, the troll that sold it to me was not the last registered owner so the bill of sale was worthless. I contacted the seller and offered to pay for him to register it or get me a bill of sale from the guy he got it from, he agreed then ignored me... I had to hire a title specialist to do what we call "title 42" to get a title for it. Some states are easy and some are rediculous when trying to title in situations like this.

Ha! EXACT same problem with a 62 shortwide i bought. Some douchebag never titled the truck - which is that owner's prerrogative but can completely screw the next owner... which it did in my case. The guys name on the title, and the bill of sale (which was signed days earlier) had been dead for years... all because the "owner" was too lazy to title it. He was a collector. Whatever. If you're gonna sell something, don't decieve the buyer - this was worse than a skipped title, it was also a forged bill of sale, which was very illegal. Many, if not most, states will not allow one to title a vehicle with a skipped title, the slang term for this scenario. Whew.... got me off on a tangent and raised my bp just remembering that mess! anyhoo...

Also for got to mention I'd need the pump and brackets!

Try to get pump,pulleys,brackets and all from the same truck.I like the 73^ steering box (just feels better to me).If it's a 350 any combo should be alright as long as WP length matches.I've found 2-3 different bracket offsets and at least 2 pulley offsets for 6 cyl trucks in the non-integrated head version.Of course,some of those brackets were of unknown origin and may have been from a car.I think the 350 set is more standard.

At that point you might as well buy a donor truck to get everything you need. It would be easier than trying to source it all individually.

My 68 was non power steering and brakes, so I bought the front end off a 72 for $80. Got everything I needed and a sway bar too. I donor would get you all that stuff and you auto related column, crossmember, kick down linkage, etc...

I didnt answer the real question on PS... I am using a 97 "vortec 5.7" with all the serpentine accessory brackets and an '84 GMC truck steering gear box (metric) so I should be able to get a high pressure hose from the '80s(metric) and having a serp setup is nice too.. if it isn't compatable I can have a hose made but I beleive the 80s were metric. That and I haven't mounted my steering gear box but I have read on here that I need a spacer due to the '67 frame not having the dimple for PS. I should have it all installed soon... There are plenty of 88-98 serp set ups in the junkyards and they make a nice looking serpentine accessory belt drive unless you are going for the stock look.
