Rear mounted under bed gas tank

Ok, I'm sure someone has answered this question before, I'm having trouble finding a good answer. I am building a 1948 Chevrolet 3100 with a camaro/nova rear with TCI style leaf springs. I would like to by an inexpensive tank either steel or poly with a side filler to be routed through the fender. I would appreciate any help and photos would be great. Rod1948

Thanks for the response. I've seen those but they are a little pricy for my budget. I would like to use an oem steel replacement style that I could retrofit into place or a poly tank. I had heard about someone using the rear tank out of a Ford full size pickup, but I'm not sure of the year. Any other suggestions from anyone????

There are several threads on here about putting 67/72 Blazer tanks under the early trucks.
Some guys have used the first generation Mustang tanks too but you usually have to run the filler up through the bed on that one.

I've got an aluminum tank that hangs down almost as far as the one Parkwood showed above and although it holds 20 gallons and works well it is ugly showing out behind the truck. I've never liked it for that reason even though it was given to me for my birthday one year.

I have a 48 gmc where I ran into the same problem. I eneded up going with a 1964 nova rear tank which fit perfectly between the rails and when looking from the rear you can barely even see it because it tapers off toward the rear of the truck. It fills from the drivers side and If I remember right it cost me 120 bucks brand new. Only downside is it only holds 16 gallons but for what I do that is plently of fuel for a good time!

I'll check into the Blazer tank's dimensions. I'm afraid that the aluminum tank would hang down past my roll pan which would defeat my goal of trying to have a clean look from the rear. It wouldn't bother me as much if I was running a rear bumper.

now im not sure about the differences between the rear of you frame and mine being a 67 but if theyre somewhat the same width or anything you could use what i did. i used a 49-52 chevy passenger car tank from tanks inc. its shallow enough under the 67 models with a roll pan you cant see it at all and the filler comes out of the back drivers side corner of the tasnk and could easily be routed to come straight out of the fender. my frame is probably quite different but if you want pictures of my fabrication i will post them tmrw when i find my cord for my phone. just let me know

that might not fit well. the frame rails are about 29 inches wide, and at least on my 52 3600, the 21 1/4" dimension would bring the tank bit close to the rear end

This might apply might not. I just installed a 73 K5 Blazer tank on my 57 Chevy. Its holds 25 gallons.

i like the 60s mustang tanks. They were mounted with a fflange and the filler is at the rear.

You may have to trim your top frame rails slightly to get the Mustang tank to drop in.
You could change the filler to a side fill also.

This Mustang tank is in a TF Chassis.

Mine is an ad so I wont have that problem. but even with the trimming I think It looks cleaner without the straps.


Is pollard flat still open? I spent a few nites in the parking lot when I was truckin up there.

If decide to go mustang make sure you put it on the bottom of the frame rail or you wont be able to access the bed bolts. If you are going to mount it on top weld in some clinch nuts before hand and use button head allen screws in place of the carriage bolts that mount the bed to the frame.

something else to consider is the situation of ever having to repair the tank or change the sending unit. i trimmed the bottom frame rails to where the tank can drop out the bottom. then just strap it up there to hold it in. just a thought

Just finished doing this in my truck, I was searching to see if anyone had a solution for the sending unit. Not sure if this came up before but the solution seemed fairly easy, I used a 65 mustang sending unit and gutted the potentiometer and just bolted on a GM one (generic 0-90ohm from RCI in a corrected position, would work for 0-90ohm and 0-30ohm depending on if you are running original or aftermarket guages.... if you map out the empty/ fill point you can just re-adjust the float to the same locations.

Will the 80s EFI Blazer tanks accept a newer style LS1 fuel pump? I want to keep this all as OEM as possible for parts availability & cost. Basically the question is if the lock rings will fit, older vs newer style pumps.

I used one from a 90ish chevy blazer. I'll try to post pics later, its only mocked up at the moment. Measurements are 33x22x10.5

I'm going to go with the 73 Blazer tank in my 58 GMC. Is that a 31 gallon tank you have? I think I'm going to go with the 25 gallon tank.

The 31 gallon is 12 3/4 tall, the 25 gallon is 10 3/4 tall.

That Blazer tank looks like it would hang way too low for me. I am leaning toward the Mustang style tank that Tanks, Inc. is selling that allows the GM style five bolt sending unit.

I'm wondering if you'd have to mount it to the bottom flange of the frame (then you loses the benefit of it's shallow 7-1/2" depth) or if you could get away trimming a small amount (1/2") off each lower frame flange so you could angle the tank out from below if you have to after the bed is on? Like Rudy said above, I'm thinking welding nuts onto the frame top flange.

I was just thinking the same thing Dan while scrolling down to see who had just posted on the thread.

I'm going to have to put a notch in my frame and raise the bed a like amount and that should give me a few inches to raise the tank up so maybe the bottom of the tank is close to the bottom of the frame rail.
