Question Starter trouble

I have searched the forum for this problem but can't find it. I have a 57 pickup with a 350 crate motor. A new ez wiring harness ,new starter. When I go to start car it would not start till the key is released bac to run position at start it just spins. I could deal with that. The problem is 1 when I go to shut it off when I turn it right to off the starter engages if I turn just a little bit it shuts off no problem. Also being that I have to let off the key for it to start the MSD I just put in won't start car unless I go to a hot line such as lights, then it starts right up. for some reason when the ignition switch is released there is no power to the start terminal. Any help wold be great. I am thinking maybe ignition switch bad or ?????????

vettevet posted great diagrams.

sounds like a couple things, wired wrong and uh....

whatever you have. the ign. should be off to the left not right. center (run)is hot to msd., and temporary right (start) should be hot to starter solonoid

should be no power to start solonoid when key is released...

Re: Starter trouble

stock starter switch or new column?
sounds like bad wiring or switch.
switch problem would be easy to diagnose with a multimeter or test light
but i'd check wiring first and how your connected to the switch

Re: Starter trouble

Sounds like your ign. is wired to the accesory circuit.

Re: Starter trouble

You have it wired to acc term, need to check wiring so it has power in start position only.
