Installing gas tank cover (carpet)...help?

I'm attempting to install my carpeted gas tank cover. I can only assume that the plastic "clips" are the TOP, and secure to the top lip of the gas tank, BUT, it appears as if I may have to do some trimming b/c I have a lot of extra material. Is this right? Any one have pics?
