Exhaust Plans/ Will this work?

I'm back from Afghanistan & ready to get my 66 1/2 SWB fleetside back on the road. First up is to replace the rusted out headers & exhaust. I have owned the truck almost 10 years and this is the second set to rust through.

I decided to go to rams horn manifolds & found a set like the picture. The rams horns have a 2" outlet. I don't run my engine @ high rpms very often & I would rather pick up some low end power & mileage improvement.

Behind the rams horns, I want to run a stainless kit as shown, I can get the kit in 2 inch, 2.5 or 3 inch. I'll add some stainless flowmasters to match the diameter.

I doubt there will be any drop in power and you should get a little extra torque down low. I believe the 1965 327 corvettes ran pretty much the exact same setup, ram horns to 2 inch duals and they made about 375 hp. ( may be wrong) Despite how simple the ram horns look they flow very well. I'm looking into doing a similar setup, what exhaust kit is that?

Shouldn`t be a problem, I`m running the same thing with 350, I not running the heat valve as well, just takes a little longer to warm up but thats one thing less to stick closed.

Welcome home!

For best efficiency with a mild engine and 2” manifolds my personal opinion is the pipes should be 2” or 2 ¼”. 3” is too big unless you’re going with headers and have some serious breathing in the engine. 2.5” would probably be just fine, but will cost more money mainly for cosmetics. There are probably 3 primary disadvantages with really large pipes. They can drop torque, cost more money, and can be significantly harder to route where they get close to the chassis or suspension. I’m running 2” ram manifolds with 2 ¼” pipes, also with no heat riser. They offer reasonably impressive appearance and certainly don’t restrict the meager output of what is essentially a stock engine.

I found the kit on Amazon. It's a Flowmaster Kit w/o mufflers. Pypes also sells a kit less pipe, higher price. Magnaflow has a higher priced kit that includes mufflers.

You can order in most diameters between 2" & 3". I found Amazon often has lower prices than most other sellers but you need to do your research elsewhere.

Cherry bomb makes an affordable exhaust system specifically for the '63-'72 C10's in both 2.25" and 2.50" tube. However I can't seem to find anyone that shows them available. I was just looking at them last week. I have the part number at the shop.

When I had the 283 in my truck I used 2" pipe without crossover and when stepped on the gas hard it felt like the motor was being held back and it sounded terrible, "blatty". I ran dual out the back with Flowmaster mufflers and used the ram's horn manifolds.

I found those exhaust systems I was looking for. I was mistaken, they are Thrush brand, not Cherry Bomb.

Not a bad price for a complete exhaust system IMO. Granted the mufflers aren't anything special, but still.
