Power Steering Pump Question
I am in the process of replacing the power steering pump and reservoir on my 1979 Silverado. I ordered a remanufactured one from AC Delco through RockAuto using their by application selection process. When I got it, the pump was "clocked" wrong in the reservoir and would not fit as the fill tube faced the wrong direction (it conflicted with my A/C compressor). In other words, the mounting holes to mount the pump/reservoir to the engine mounting bracket did not line up. They were at about 1 and 7 o'clock in relation to the fill tube. On my original pump the mounting holes are at about 3 and 9 o'clock in relation to the fill tube which allowed the fill tube to face away from the A/C compressor.
I have since gone to NAPA and O'Reilly's and their by-application computer result gives them the same thing. I have also checked my father's 77 and 75 trucks and they are the same as mine. What do I need to do to get the correct power steering pump? Do I need to specify A/C? What application uses the power steering pump I received from RockAuto? Any information would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
I bought AC Delco part number 36-516012. Your pictures show what my truck looks like now, with the old pump on it. But when I attach the bracket to the pump, the filler tube is pointed in the wrong direction (towards the A/C compressor).

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
Try one from a '70 c/10 the holes are clocked different but the shaft will be keyed so you'll need a pulley too

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
Thanks for the help 88Jimmy4x4, I will give the part number you got a try. Any idea what application the one I got is suppose to work on? In other words, why are some clocked differently?

Only differences I saw for the years was with hydraboost and without hydraboost. I think hrdraboost is where it connects to brake booster iirc. might want to do more research before you purchase unless they have one locally you can compare the two in person. good luck

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
hydroboost just gives you an extra return port on the can.

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
It is my understanding that hydraboost uses vacuum from the brake booster, a feature I don't have.
Anyways, thanks for the help. I guess I will just return what I have and go to a local parts store and find one that is "clock" correctly. Wish I knew why they are clocked differently. I realize my brackets could be for an older truck, but based on how unmolested the rest of the truck is I have my doubts. |

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
well maybe your truck is an early 79 and the factory was still using 76-78 pump brackets....who knows
