Clutch linkage problems
I have been working the past few weeks on putting an engine in my 63 4x4. I put an engine and bell housing in the was in a 62 chevy 4x4, the only diffrence is the 63 has a 4 speed and the 62 had a 3 speed. My problem is when i put the clutch pedel down the throwout bearing dosent even touch the clutch fingers till the last half inch. The clutch is in the right way and hasnt been apart since i ran it in the other pickup. The only thing I can think of is that the linkages are diffrent from one cab to another?

are you perhaps missing that little wedge piece on the end of the adj rod where it enters the t/out arm?

if it's not what padresag mentioned above (i.e. when someone pushes the clutch, do you see the clutch fork pivoting at all - or does the end of the rod just poke through the fork with nothing stoipping it?) then I'd consider the following:
- Recommend using the original linkage that was on the truck, not the linkage that came with the trans. Bell entry point the same, so what is important is the rest of the linkage (did you pull a v8 and install a v8?) - Check to make sure you haven't installed your release bearing backwards - this release bearing (or throwout bearing) should have the moveable/rotating (also usually the thick) end closest to the clutch release diaphragm fingers. Installing it backwards will have similar problems as what you mention. Be glad it didn't engage because you could damage it if it is pressed against the diaphragm with the engine spinning. - Have you adjusted the clutch linkage? Should have someone (or the return spring) hold the clutch fully against it's pedal travel stop (i.e. fully released), and also have the rod that actuates the clutch fork pushed aft fully to sumulate initial contact - then back the linkage off about 1/8" - 1/4" to ensure the release bearing doesn't ride on the diaphragm when the clutch is not engaged and also to provide a little pedal travel from the bump stop. |

I bought a new wedge from LMC, the throw out bearing is on right and the linkage is adjusted as far out as it will go, however I dont have the linkage that was with the pickup os that could be the problem. were there diffrent lengths? would it be possibul that the pedel and the arm in the cab are cloked wrong?

For starters, a '62 would have had a hydraulically operated clutch. In which case someone somewhere must have converted it to mechanical clutch linkage. It is possible that what you are working with is not all original parts. In my experience, all the '63-'66 mechanical clutch linkage is all the same. I know you said the clutch and all is the same as when it was working before, but it sounds to me like you have the short throwout bearing when you need the long one.

capt did the 62 4 x 4 also have the hydr linkage? no xmember to worry about. reason that I didn't mention the release brg as he said that the clutch was operating behind that motor in another truck. if the 62 4 x 4 had mechanical linkage i would presume that it would be different somehow as there would be more room in a 62 due to the distance between the frame rails

I was told the cab was a 62 but there is no serial plate, the fenders are from a 64 and the grill is no wear to be found, so it is possibule that the cab is a 63. if anyone has a 63 4x4 with mechanical linkages it would be very helpful if I couuld get measuments!thanks

the linkage is the same 2 x 4 or 4 x 4. perhaps you got some GMC stuff in there for the v6 application-z bar is different.
linkage is just linkage, basically. you push the pedal- moves the linkage- if you have the right zbar, the leverage is right. now you more than likely have wear in places. if your clutch is in good shape you should be able to adjust the linkage so that you have about 3/4" free play in the top of the pedal- the t/o being clear of the pressure plate. if you don't then you have a problem there somewhere . you say that the clutch was working in that eng in another vehicle and you didn't change it. what about the t/o brg, did you change it- mounted properly? is the arm on properly. now we are back to that little wedge dealy. how is your adj-at the end of the rod. zbar-is it straight or does it have a kink in it. no where else to go unless there is some slippage in the shaft or slop(bushings) at the top of the pedal ron |

It's been a while since I have been around a '60-'62 K series, but as far as I can remember they had the hydraulic clutch.
63chevy4x4, maybe if you could post a pic or two of what you have we can see if there is something wrong with the linkage arrangement.

Sounds, good, Ill try get that done today,were getting combines ready so my projects will probaly be on hold but if i dont get this figured out its gonna bother me!
