Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

With Cheyenne Super being "top of the line" as luxury goes, they usually were pretty well optioned. However, check out this 72 Cheyenne Super (swb) I picked up yesterday! 350, manual trans, manual steering and brakes, no A/C and radio delete.

That is really an odd combo. Must have wanted a plain Jane, but the wood grain panels were a must-have. Plans?

Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

I was headed back from a big swap meet about 50 miles from home with a trailer load of parts (I was set up selling parts). I found the truck at a repair shop and doubled back to check it out. Guy said it wasn't for sale. After a little small talk, I asked again and he said "you wouldn't give what I'd have to have for it if I did sell it". He ate crow on that one!! After we made the deal, I had to re-arrange everything on my trailer, putting parts in the cab and bed.

BTW, it's not as nice as it looks. I had to get the picture angle right so it would show the driver's side cab bashed in where a tree fell on it!

On that same picture, look through the pass. door glass and you can barely see the cab roof bent down real bad on the driver's side. I'm in cheap enough to part it and I actually need the frame for one of my projects. It would be a neat truck to bring back to life, but it would definitly need a cab.

Question Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

My guess would be that its either delivered within a fleet order to a dealer, but wasnt part of a company order.

Order all 50 and we will throw in 10 at less than cost?

I see stuff like this where the military ordered stripped as delivered vehicles.

However, it could have been a left over that was assembled that never got an order.

Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

We can speculate all day long. I doubt a dealer would order one that way. I think it's yet another example of how you could get just what you wanted. My speculation is some feller was set in his ways that a truck should be simple, like all the others he had,yet liked the idea of a bit more comfort and appearance in the cab. Figure the earlier trucks were that way. You got a Deluxe or Custom cab and it was just trim and more glass. By '72 everybody got the glass. I've seen base models with more options, which is what was so neat about these trucks. They could be "built" to suit the owner's needs, just like the big trucks.
I'd be tempted to save that one and find another frame, but that's me. A top could be grafted on if the damage is not down through to the floor. Can't say from here. But,it's a factory Cheyenne Super SWB regardless of options. People add that stuff to Customs and stick emblems on them. This is the real deal. Maybe the SPID would show the automatic trans or whatever else was added wasn't original, but that beats a SPID not showing it's an original Super. The mechanics can always be switched back for a 100% original restoration and, yes, even a low option Cheyenne Super SWB will always be desirable and have higher value. It is a shame it started out low option and ended up loaded...with a tree!

Thanks a lot Special-K, you've got me thinking about keeping it now and I sure don't have time to start another project! I totally agree about cloned Supers and maybe it would be a bad idea to part it.

Cool truck.
I'm interested in the glove box door and radio delete,.... if you decide to part it out.

Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

If trucks were special ordered, they had an order number in the lower right corner of the SPID, right? This one does not have an order number so I figured GM ran it down the assembly line figuring that someone would buy it. For all who have PM'd or asked here, I'm keeping the glovebox door - either to keep with the truck for a future build, or just to hang on the wall.

Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

Well,I thought some about it and you have all you need to build a proper clone. Basically,it wouldn't be a clone, just an original a tree fell on and needed a cab replacement. I guess that still is a project,though...sorry (maybe we can get everyone here to pitch in and do it one weekend )

You're right about the no order number. Although,I believe I have seen some special orders that didn't have it. My re-speculation is that maybe a dealer ordered it that way figuring one of those old codgers I described would want it. How's that?

Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

In 1994 I bought a stripped down Z28, 1LE RPO car. If you're not familiar with these, they only made 119 of them in 94. Basically it is a race car you can buy off the lot. Aluminum drive shaft, no air conditioning, you had to order it with a radio(which mine had) no driving lights, different steering components, 6 speed etc. BUT, it still had Z28 badging on it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is there is just something to be said about a top of the line car (or truck ) that is all business. This is the way I would have had a Cheyenne Super if I could go back in time and order one. I'd love to have this truck

Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

I had one of two identical SWB '68 CSTs w/396 ordered by two brothers. These trucks were red w/white top,red interior,396/3spd/posi/tach. They had no radio, power steering,or power brakes. Just the performance options on a CST.

Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

id like to think this is a very uncommon site since its a cheyenne super, i would love to see this one restored and would love to see the build thread on this, if i had the resources i would definatly do it, when is the last time you saw a truck like this, better yet if you part it out for the frame when will you ever come across one like it again? maybe never? i vote for saving her should we start a poll??? lol

vote yes on project saving cheyenne!

Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

yes, the cool, wow, puuzling factor is definatly there, and the thought of owning a truck that hardly anyone has if there is even another one like it out there is enough to almost make me enbious, i mean sure there plain jane shorties but how many plain jane cheyenne super shorties!

iv heard stories of factories being out of say low trim level steering wheels so they put a higher trim level wheel in etc, maybe thats the case here maybe they were low on some parts or had extra of something and just put some random truck together noone knows and thats one of the cool things about this truck

the only and almost impossible way to find out the story is to track down the original owner but who knows how many owners this thing has had

Re: Loaded Cheyenne Super? Check this one out!!

OK, here's a few more pictures. I had to pull the dr. side door - it would not shut all the way and would not open right either. You guys talked me out of parting it! Like you all said, she is a true short Super regardless of options. I got it running after a tune up, but there's some heavy snapping and popping coming out of the carburetor during acceleration (cam shaft, right?) It goes through the gears good and the brakes are good. However, the truck has sat for a long time and most everything on the inside has surface rust.

Sorry to dissapoint suscribers, but it will be a while before I do much to it, just occasionally move it around my place until I can find a good cab. Right now I've got a few projects going on and, until I find a pile of money under a rock, that's all I can afford!

It does look a little rougher from the drivers side. Glad your gonna rebuild it. IMO the popping etc could be stuck vales not opening and closing correctly.
