well, I should have said I BOUGHT one today. It's an '87 w/6.2,TH400..got it for $500. Let me know what ya think.
Also, has anyone here ever STRETCHED a bed. The wheelbase is 135.5...4" longer than a std longbed...would be kinda cool to have a Square LONGHORN!...a Squarehorn!

In 70-72 I think their was a "longhorn" model that had an extra foot and half, my sons father in law had one a year or so ago.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
Guy at work had a chassis cab Dodge he made into a long long bed. I thing its 10 and a half feet. Made his own dually fenders for the bed. Pretty bad ass rig. 19.5 alcoas, juiced up cummins.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
Longhorn was late-68 to 72. It was built on the 133" SRW 1t cab & chassis frame which gave an extra 6" over the standard 127" longbed pu. I think that one I showed is 12'. It's longer behind the wheels, too. Back in the late-70s there was a guy around here who built a new Chevy 8-lugger with a 12' bed w/ tandem axles. It looked g-r-eat! It was that lime green color with 6 chrome spokes. Not sure what the purpose was or if there was one other than building something different in the height of the late-70s truckin' boom. He owned a liquor store and that's where I saw it.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
I will probably sell the flatbed that is on it...truck has a claimed weight of 6200lbs! which makes the weight fee $210 alone! I will remove the flatbed get it weighed and hopefully get it below 5000 lbs...then the weight fee will only be $80. I am planning on building my own LIGHT weight flatbed, lower it and pull the smoker with it.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
That would be cool and all, but you dont exactly want 250-325* around your fuel tanks.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
If it was me i would build a extended cab with a normal long bed.Or do the crew cab short bed both will take some time and skill to pull off and look good.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
I'm liking that idea of a extended cab 8ft bed.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
It would only be a 4" extra-cab. The wheelbase is 135.5.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
I was planning on do this with my K30 C&C but Ive decided to go a different route now, except mine is about 2 feet longer. You just need the front section from another bed and a lot of tack welding.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
i picked up a 1980 gmc k35 a wile ago and its a straight cab 12 foot flat bed im thinking about streaching a bed and putting the engine back there making an intake that sits just above the roof line and cherrybombs straight up mounted right to some block hugger headers turned over

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
What do i think?
1) Why so cheap? No rust on top of that. (!) 2) i thought some (maybe all) crew cab beds are a foot longer than regular cab beds? |

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
Well, I have said this about a lot of the trucks I have owned...but this one for some reason sits very well with my plans. I want to have a multi-purpose truck. I dont haul any gravel or construction equipment,so the current flat bed has to go(TOO HEAVY)...I 'DO" however tow a car trailer and my BBQ smoker trailer. I will carry up to 700lbs of meat plus my sides and other things(all in ice chests, except for EZ-UP and chairs).
I am planning on eventually using oak wine casks for my storage. I will stain them on the outside and burn my company's logo on them. I want to build a custom flatbed after lowering the truck. I dont want to SLAM the truck because it still has to be functional,so probably a 3/4 drop with helper bags in the back. I dont want to notch the frame either. As much as it's been over played, I still want to paint the truck satin(not flat) black with lime green accents/subtle flames. I will put Alcoas on it but have them powder coated black(glossy for contrast) with the center of the holes green and run chrome lug nuts. The bed I am going to build will be "tubbed" to accommodate the lowering of the truck. The floor of the bed will be a dark stain/varnish for more of a "mission" style to it. And it will have sides so it hides the truck's frame....I will come up with more ideas soon. I wish I could afford for someone to do a rendering of it so I stay motivated. But for now I have to MAKE myself stay motivated.

Re: picked up a Cab/Chassis diesel today
What about using a normal long bed and building a storage unit between the bed and cab?
