terrible day driving the truck
well today i actually get to drive the truck and it should be working good with the 383 stroker i bought from a friend. so im driving about 40 and a friend of mine trys to pass me on the right. so i put it to the floor away i went, i get up the hill and i see my heat gauge pegged out. so i pull over and check it out. after cracking the radiator cap and looking around its nothing just the wire fell off the temp sensor. so i fire it back up and drive home. to get home i see antifreeze all over the side of the truck so i go to wash it off and see oil dripping out of the rear main seal. and to top it off the drivers side exhaust pipe smokes like a banshee! oh no , i didnt even step on it hard what can it be ? i need help thanks
matt

did you forget to tighten the radiator cap that let antifreeze out all over the motor and side of the truck and exhaust pipe the oil well that couldbe the rear main seal NOT put in right?

i would guess at the minimum you should pull the engine replace tha main seal and go over it to check to see everything else is installed and torqued correctly. guess your friend didn't give you any type of warrenty???lesson learned?? YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Matt, I know your discouraged right now, but don't do anything rash!. Make sure you know where the oil is leaking from before you pull the motor. I recommend pressure testing the cooling system cold to locate the coolant leak. As for the smoking exhaust, do a compression test on that side to determine any differences between the cylinders. Knowing what your looking to fix, and where it is ,will be much better than tearing it all down blind. Sorry to hear about the ptoblems, but they may not be that bad. Maybe the oil pan is leaking, not the seal...loose clamp on a heater hose..etc. Take some time , and find the causes. Good Luck!!!

Class of 69 is 100% correct. Take your time and don't jump the gun. Could it be the oil pan gasket or maybe the intake manifold leaking instead of the rear main? It could even be the corner of a valve cover fell in and it just blows oil to the back of the engine. Your antifreeze problem could be a leaky heater hose by the headers or worst case a freeze plug. Check out the small things first before tearing it down.

i agree, it probably is just a simple problem that won't take long to fix. Just last week, C-tenkid pulled his motor to fix his rear main, and it ended up being a valve cover gasket

thanks guys, im waiting til morning so i can run compression tests and coolent tests on it. hopefully it isnt bad! also i was thinking i dont have a pcv valve just a oil tube i cut into the manifold and has a breather on top. thinking its not venting the crankcase, and filling one side of the motor up with oil? becuase it smokes when you step on it ever since i got the motor in thanks
matt

on any small block you need a pvc and a breather.if your missing one or the other your asking for problems. you could have to much crankcase pressure, and that will blow a seal or gasket.you may find a bad intake gasket the way you descibe the smoking.

the 327s had a oil fill tube in the intake with a breather, and a breather at the back of the engine that was internal. they do make a fill tube with threads for a pvc valve to screw in to the tube. you can get them aftermarket, i think classic industries have them.but you deffinately need to run both pvc and a breather.
