On my 72 Chevy truck is the metal dash welded in or bolted in? Also does anybody know of anybody who has an original AC dash for sale. I messed mine up cutting it.

Re: Dash and AC question

Combination of both. Three bolts on each side and then spot welded across lower windshield seam. Some guys cut it underneath the dash pad and thru the area of the glove box and dash cluster if you just need to replace the radio area.

Re: Dash and AC question

I would not say a few ........ If your going to replace the entire dash you will need to remove the windshield to be able to drill out the spotwelds. It is spotwelded like every half inch all the way across the bottm of the winshield opening. If you remove the dash pad you could take a cutoff wheel and cut it where the dash pad will hide it later after itis welded. Either way can be a PITA but is very doable. I have several dashes already removed but dont have any ac ones right now. THere were several on the parts board a few weeks ago.

Re: Dash and AC question

I replaced my non-AC dash with an uncut AC dash. I installed a Vintage Air kit and wanted to replace my dash anyway. I painted my dash a head of time before putting it in. I think most guys paint it after its installed because they weld it back in. I didn't do this. I didn't drill out all the pinch welds either. I cut the old dash with a cut off wheel and then ground down the area at the welds a little. When I installed the new dash I used panel bond epoxy that body shops use. I used several vice grips to clam it in place until it dried overnight. This is just as strong, if not stronger than the pinch welds. Plus it allowed me to paint the dash ahead of time, which would be a problem if it was welded in. After all the gauges and items were taken out, The removal and install was done in an afternoon. The first two pictures are of the old dash. It was cut up and had holes like Swiss cheese from the PO. The last two picts are of the new dash installed.
