Engine part question
On my 89 454 tbi it has what loOks like brass tubes running right above the exhaust manifold. What is this. Is it a something I need to worry about going bad or being replaced as a general maintance type thing? When ordering headers or getting replacement manifolds do I need to order special ones?
I can't post pics from my iPhone using safari sorry and thanks. Posted via Mobile Device |

Air injection tubes. Here's a link to them and header info.

Re: Engine part question
Yup thats them. Got a few more questions. These two things are On the drivers side of the engine. One is by the hood hinge has some vent lines running into it it's kinda softball size black plastic. Then the other is a canister behinds the drivers side headlight.
Also on the passenger side the factory air cleaner has a larger rubber hose running out of it And going into something that's closer to the front of the engine. What's that it appears to be plugged in also. Is it safe to unhook it if it's egr? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Engine part question
Softball thingy is a dampner for your cruise control.
The canister is a charcoal filter. It takes fuel vapor from your gas tank to run into your carb. Large rubber hose is an air inlet for your aircleaner. It's open inside the corner of your fender. Draws cooler air in. Cooler air gives you more power and mileage. Egr is a good thing. Helps with your mileage and emissions. |

Re: Engine part question
Geezer, I think the softball thingie is the vacuum reservoir, and the hose he might be talking about could be the PCV hose. Man, pics would sure help.

Re: Engine part question
Ya when I get back to a computer I'll be posting pictures because there are a bunch of plugs and splicing I'm unsure of. Just moving right now and it's all packed away. Ya it's not the air cleaner hose that runs up to the grill area. This is the pcv hose I would guess.
I sure wish someone lived close to the Dayton area I would offer up a case of beer just to stop by and take a look and educate me a bit. Thanks again. Larry Posted via Mobile Device |
