Windshield seal won't suck up
Just installed a new Precision brand windshield gasket
top won't seat with body . As you see there is about 1/2 gap. When I bought this gasket the dealer said the company (Precision ) was back ordering due to new molding set up. So I waited about four months and was shipped to me. Unfortunately I was not able to install in until now, a year later. Anyone have similar problem ? Original glass, clean newly painted cab all spot weld points smooth no distortions in metal. Gasket stored in original plastic bag inside my shop.

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
Same story, mine's wrinkled up in the upper corners, done by a "pro".
Gotta come out and be redone. PIA. And we are not alone, seems to be a common problem with the deluxe trim setup. Do a search on here and you'll see what I mean.

Mine is doing it too .. the chrome trim all the way across the top of the windshield. New glass, new gasket, original trim.

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
RenoKeene, suggested I do a search of the forum on the subject.
I did ,well there is a lot of us that have problems. I believe there are enough buyers on this forum alone that could find a solution from the makers , I will start with Classic Industries. Stay tuned.

a product concern. Didn't go any further. Sales guy said he handles complaints. OK......... let him know our problems. His first response was " haven't heard anything about that " After a few minutes of talking, and probing his product knowledge ,he did agree to take the complaint to management and request info from the wholesaler that sells them Precision. We also settled on a two week turn around to get back to me by phone. Like I said ...stay tuned.

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
I think a lot of the problems are caused by improper installation. Most glass guys want to start at the bottom and work their way up to the top. But these winshields must be installed top first. That will eliminate a lot of the funky bunching at the top corners.

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
Strange that there are so many problems with windshield rubber from so many different manufacturers. I need a new windshield and I am afraid to order the trim. I guess I will wait a bit and see if a solution is found...

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
The precision gasket I installed with trim looked like RenoKeene problems. Kept massaging it until it was fairly acceptable but, after a while, it dropped in one area on the outside. I'll re-seal it and it will do it again. So, I'm replacing first chance I get. I wish the board dealers (good 'Ole truck builders) could put some pressure on the manufacture. They have to test fit these, someplace in the world. Maybe there eyes are the problem -can't see the mess of wrinkled rubber!

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
Are you using repop trim or original trim? 67-70 type of 71 -72 type. Precision fits better than steele or any of the other crap out there unfortunately. If it is a 67-70 type gasket keep working the rubber it will lay down better than what it is now .as far as corner wrinkle try working the outside of the glass (i have a dent pulling suction cup that i use to help adjust the glass in the hole which helps. Also what type of replacement glass are you using? The cheaper stuff is thinner and does not fit as well as original or the higher end glass. I have put several of these in and the repop rubber combined with repop trim sucks simple as that. Repop rubber and oem trim is ok

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
My glass guy has been doing antique and classic cars auto glass for 30 years, After 2 precision brand gaskets he gave up !
I happen to find a G.M. nos gasket, and the third time was a charm. Perfect fit. It is a shame that you cant find a new windshield gasket for these trucks that actually fit.

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
Though this doesn't apply to 8doors original post, since he's dealing with OEM glass, it may help
someone going through a windshield change. My glass guy told me 15 years ago that many of the re-pop windshield's glass was thinner. (as 71 Super mentioned) He did mine with the OEM stainless trim & gasket but said he generally refuses the jobs because of the leak/fitage problems. My glass was repop and luckily it fit. Good luck 8doors with getting a resolution to this. Last edited by ETsC10; 08-21-2012 at 11:08 AM. |

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
This thread is driving me nuts because I've been here also.
I’m wondering if the re-pop folks are patterning their gaskets according to newer cars. According to RenoKeene’s photo, that seems to fit since it seems the newer car windshields are sealed because they are glued to the car and his looks like the design is been carried over to our trucks. i.e.---the inner lip of the gasket is simply cosmetic to cover the glass/car union. Maybe the inside rim of our gaskets are actually designed far differently and actually serve a purpose in the seal. Much stiffer and seem to be wedge-shaped to serve that purpose of stabilizing the glass more; hence the seal?

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
I have the same problem with my new gasket also. The inner right top isn't as bad but it doesn't fit as tight as I would like it too.I went thru 3 from LMC that was way worse than this ( I wasn't thinking when I ordered the first one). I am using the original trim in a preciesion gasket ,it does fit a hole lot better.
On the 71 I have the regular gasket with no trim. will see how it fits in a few months. |

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
If I was doing one with the trim I would only install 67-70 trim it has a long lip vs 71-72 with a short lip. Even if I was doing a 71-72 I would put the 67-70 style rubber and trim in it. Again this is what I have had the best luck doing.

Could be Precision is just making a repo of the 71-72. So your supplier offers two types ?

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
Yes there are two types, long leg and short leg. Mine is long leg and like I said was installed by a pro (I work at a glass house). I bet he has 8 hours in this already and it's still a turd. Went through two precision gaskets and finally the installer supplied his own (I don't know what brand). As you can see this didn't work either. I now have a OEM gasket and trim for the next try (repop glass but I have a OEM windshield if it gets that far), I have to fix this one way or another as my truck is waaaay too nice for this kind of crap (can you tell I'm pissed?). I also heard that the corner of the pinch weld might need trimed a little....
I'll let you all know what the fix is (in my case) when I figure it out.

Re: Windshield seal won't suck up
8door...in your case if it doesn't leak you can seal it up with some black 3M sealer, should be ok. If it does leak sealing the inside would stop the leak but trap water and eventually rust.
