Need some ideas why truck not starting...

I pulled my steering column apart thinking I had to change my turn signal switch. Didn't need to be changed so I put column back together, correctly I think, but now truck won't start. I put in new starter but still doesn't turn over. I turn on truck and all that comes on is brake light. I tried to start it in every gear and nothing happens. Could I have dislocated the neutral safety switch while trying to pull turn signal cam out of column? (Column was still bolted in place) I still have to get under and check to make sure power is getting to purple wire of starter. Is there any way to do this with one guy? Any other ideas?

Try wiggling the shifter through all the gears while turning the key

with the truck in park emergency brake on disconnect the 2purple wires from the neutral safty switch use a short piece of wire to jump these 2wires and if it starts then you have a switch problem

I'm kinda with old Rusty. Seems like you pulled the harness plug off the nuetral safety. I suggest rechecking all wire connections. Since the column was still in truck, it doesn't seem likely the nuetral switch was moved. Easy to say, but if it worked before you took it apart, it should work after. If in doubt, see krue's signature. ( just a little joke )

LOL.
Yeah, while you were working in there you may have actually kicked the safety switch...I did that once and felt like a jack ass when the truck sat for 2 days while I wondered what I did wrong on my stereo install.

The easiest way for one person is to see when your backup lights come on. Put it in reverse and if the backup lights work then your neutral safety switch is in the right place. That means the ignition part on the neutral safety should also be in line so your problem is elsewhere. If the backup lights come on before or after reverse then you have to shift the switch over to where it should be.

CHECKING FOR POWER

EASY WAY TO MAKE A ONE PERSON VOLTAGE TESTER. USE A CHEAPY BACK UP ALARM WITH TWO WIRES TO IT. YOU CAN HEAR WHEN YOU HAVE POWER TO THE CIRCUIT ON ACTIVATION. I USE THIS ALL THE TIME IN MY WORK. WORK ON BOOMS THAT ARE TO LONG TO BE THERE TO SEE THE TEST LIGHT WHEN IT COMES ON. MOST OF THE BACKUP ALARMS OPERATE AT 3 TO 36 VOLTS, SO YOU CAN TEST DIFFERENT CIRCUITS. HOOK UP OF CORRECT POLAIRITY IS A MUST ON MINE. (+=+/ -=-)
