Can I run my 71 without the fan shroud?
I have a 71 C10 and for some reason my fan blades hit my fan shround sometimes. I've tried to realign and retighted the shround with no luck. My question is can I just run the truck without it without over heating my truck?

Check your motor mounts. They may be bad.

Re: Can I run my 71 without the fan shroud?
I forgot to add that my truck is bagged. When I layout the blades hit on the bottom of the strouud and hit on the sides/top when I air it up.

All the more reason to check the mounts like jjzeplin said, unless you have installed new ones lately... Motor "and" transmission. You can certainly try running without the shroud and if you have heating problems re-install it. LockDoc

Re: Can I run my 71 without the fan shroud?
My c10 has electric fans, no shroud, no overheating. Didn't have issues when I had the belt driven fan either

Re: Can I run my 71 without the fan shroud?
I wouldn't advise it, but some guys run without a shroud and get away with it. If you can't solve the interference problem, I'd switch to electric fans.

I run my 454 without a shroud, never had a problem. My thermocouple works and the temp is always down at the norm.

Re: Can I run my 71 without the fan shroud?
Anything's possible, of course, but if you remove the shroud you significantly increase the chance of overheating, particularly at low vehicle speeds.
Without a shroud the fan will pull air from the side, not through the rad (the path of least resistance... the shroud is there to -force- the air to come through the rad). Even electric puller fans -should- have a shroud otherwise you only "cool" the small portion of the rad surface where the fan blades are, so it's like having a tiny rad.

I've run without a shroud with no problems since 1978; BTW, I live in SoCal where there's major traffic and major heat.

Re: Can I run my 71 without the fan shroud?
My dads 68 has a small 6cyl shroud or if you should even call it a shroud, basically just a fan gaurd. He has a v8 in it with no problems in this 100+ valley weather.

Re: Can I run my 71 without the fan shroud?
I'd run the shroud. Even if you have to mod something up to force the air through the radiator. I've heard positives and negatives but more lean toward keeping it on. Wouldn't want to overheat because of a small inconvenience.
