Need new exhaust, where to hear mufflers?

I just noticed my glass packs are rusting through, one already has a hole in it and my pipes are rusted as well. I want to replace it all without spending a fortune. I have dual exhaust on it now and the pipes are 2", would Larger diameter pipe make a big difference? I like the way it the glass packs sound but am thinking of going with mufflers but have no clue what to look for. Any suggestions? If so do any of you have video/audio I can listen to to compare different systems? I've been looking at a few exhaust kits like ones LMC sells. I have a MIG and a horizontal bandsaw but am hoping I can find a kit that fits without the need to bend any pipe. This will be going on my short 72 GMC 4X4 with 350/350. Thanks!

What sound you are looking for? You said you like the glasspacks so I assume you like the aggressive sound. 2 1/2 yrs ago I added Flowmaster Super 40s which are very agressive. Last week I swapped to Flowmaster 50 seriers which are 3 chambered mufflers. My wife and neighbors are grateful I did. It's still loud but nothing like the Super 40s. Before making a decision try to hear the mufflers in person. The online clips don't capture the true experience. For instance, here is a Super 40 video. Yea mine had this sound but the video doesn't capture how loud they are in person.

That's the sound I'm after! I listened to it on my home stereo to get a better idea. I wonder if it would sound similar on a stock 350? By the looks of that Chevy I bet it's not a stock engine. Thanks!

I just put on a set of super 44s, no cat, 2.5" pipes. I haven't bought the tips yet but I'll get a video for you tonight. My suggestion is always to go.to shows or meets. Find a car you like the sound of and ask about it

Thanks! I look forward to hearing it! I bought some stainless Flowmaster tips last year from Amazon, got the pair for $30, the parts store wanted $30 bucks each. I usually buy locally but I couldn't pass on a 50% discount. I tried to order another set but apparently someone noticed the price mistake and they're way more now. Thanks again! Aaron

Yeah I was looking on summit today and the ones I like are $45 each... also my setup is on a basically stock 350 so it should sound similar on your setup. I'll take some pics of the way I ran the pipes too just to give you an idea. Oh and forgot to mention earlier, I did run an x-pipe on it as well

I don't want it to loud, well not any louder than my burned out glass packs!

Re: Need new exhaust, where to hear mufflers?

This is a stock, but cammed-up 350 with Series 40 Flowmasters and 2.5" from the stock headers back.

I don't own the truck any more, but, ironically, the new build is sitting at the muffler shop right now (see Pic). I'm going with Series 40's again... with 2.25" pipes this time (because that's what the guy wants to do....
He wants the back-pressure of the 2.25" with the more mild motor...whatever). The new Flowmasters have 2.5 inlets and outlets. I'll be using a 2.5" round chrome tip just like on the 72 on the YouTube spot.

I can post sound from the new build Monday evening.

For the moment, here's the 40's with the 350 and 2.5" pipes.

I expect the new build won't sound much different.

That sounds nice! Beautiful truck as well! I love the black plates, I wish I would have kept mine. Is it really loud or acceptably loud? I mean would I need to worry about a ticket, disturb younger neighbors, wake the dead loud? I have blown out glass packs now, they aren't really loud, would they compare to that? I live in a small town in the mountains and there aren't too many hot rods around here, not even a muffler shop! Not a lot to compare to. I wish I would have paid attention at the last car show I went to! Thanks again!

I guess what I'm asking is would they be something you would put on a daily driver? Thanks again for the video!

I have original 40 series Flowmaster's on my GTO, and I love them. I went from a relatively quiet "Turbo" muffler to those so it took some getting used to. It has 2.5" with X pipe all the way out behind the back tires. I love the sound. My 71 has something A LOT louder, that I believe are super 44's. It hurts my head driving around town. I'm also worried about getting a ticket for it. I think I'll go with the delta 50's with 2.5" to the rear bumper, or maybe dump just after the axle. Not sure yet, but it ends right under the seat of your pants right now, so I get all kinds of resonance in the cab. I swear it's louder inside than it is outside.

Well, that's subjective, no? WORRY about a ticket? No. GET a ticket. MNost probably not for "too loud" unless you dive-bomb the Burney Sunday School picnic. Disturb younger neighbors? Like a 6 month old sleeping? Maybe, it the kid is in the apartment next to your parking place and you rev to 3,000 at 2:00 am. Guaranteed: Won't wake the dead.

I love Fall River. Hat Creek. Rising River. Burney Falls. You're lucky to live up there.

Thanks for the info, as for Fall River, I've lived here 36 years, I love the summers but the winters are starting to wear on me. It gets cold and stays cold for 7 months, Im seriously considering a move to a warmer climate. It gets pretty boring stuck in the house for half the year!

Agreed. Your work is very inspiring. I absolutely love the tear drop you built. As for the super 44s... they're pretty fantastic. I couldn't get a video last night because I was going to replace the rear main which turned into a few other problems but hopefully I can get it finished today and put up a video. I'll be done working on it by 12 either way.

Thanks! I look forward to hearing what they sound like. Are the 44s louder than the 40s or is it the other way around?

From what I've been able to find these are supposed to be the same as Flowmaster's 40, anyone have any experience with these? They're $30 each, about half the price. Thoughts?
