Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

Had a scare today... I was inside the truck welding away on the dash. The tranny hump has a hole in it from where the PO had butchered the pan to jerryrig his shifter. Anyway, I felt heat; threw up the shield and fire was burning under the truck and up through the hole. Luckily- I had a fire extinguisher nearby and was able to grab it before the truck and HOUSE burnt to the ground.

Really made me think about things... I've been welding for years and never give it much thought. This truck is all metal, with all flammables removed, except the old shop rag that had fallen through the hole and laid in wait for a molten pop of slag. I literally bought that extinguisher a month ago. Tomorrow- I'm going out and buying two more.

I suggest everyone make sure they have one in easy reach- it will be the best twenty bucks you ever spent.

BTW- I ended up stopping work on the cool stuff and patching the hole- then got back to the cool stuff.

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

I have a fire extinguisher in every building on my property so no matter where I am one is close by. I bought the one with the metal heads so I can take them yearly to get checked out and pressured back up if they need it.

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

I'm sensing a theme this week. I just went out on my lunch break and bought two new extiguishers for the house and garage. I'll be ordering a smaller version for my cars because of this... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=542661

I have a fire extinguisher in every vehicle I own.
I even modified the C10 glove box to accept a large one.

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

Been meaning to grab a few. Any recommended brands to look for or stay away from? I NEED one in my 67 especially. Something easy enough to stash without trouble of retrieving. Any recommended locations to mount it?

Was going to start a thread about this but this weeks theme seems to have that covered!

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

Kiddie is what I see everywhere. Not sure who else makes them, but you'll want an A,B & C rated extiguisher. B is for flamable liquids and C is for electrical. A is wood/paper type, but works on cloth type materials too.

We saved a combine with 5 fire extinguishers last year. Definitely worth the money.

Go with one that covers A,B, and C. I use Dry Chemical (powder). Kidde has a small one for autos that's under $20. You can't afford NOT to have one. First Alert is another I have under the sink in the kitchen. I just taught my 9 year old where it is and how to use it.

Powder will put it out best but is very corrosive to all your wires and anything electrical. Granted if you are putting out a fire just the wires isn't necesarily your biggest concern. The liquid would be best not to make anymore damage than has already happened. I am in the navy and my duty station I just left was as a submarine firefighting instructor. We had a monte carlo catch on fire and we put it out with the powder and they ended up totalling the car because everything under the hood was shot because of it. But powder is very effective.

Never ever weld without a fire extinguisher at hand.

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

I have a few around the house and shop.

Also, occasionally check to see that they are pressurized too. I had one go bad on me a few years ago. Also saved the house (or at least the kitchen) from burning down when the wife was cooking

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

I've got one in the garage and one in each truck... Cheap alternative to wasting a fire extinguisher is to fill a water bottle and poke a hole in the lid to damp out small spots when welding. I always have the extinguisher handy, but I'd hate to blow a powdery white load all over the place for a small spot while welding.

I didn't mind blowing the load at all, as a matter of fact I squirted it twice just for piece of mind. Yes, it was a white mess- but I didn't buy it to decorate the wall.

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

Good point on checking them. The easiest schedule for me is to do it when time changes.
I do
1.Clock changes
2.Batteries in smoke co2 detectors
3.Fire extenguishers
4.Clock Batteries

Monthly
I do
1.AC/Heat filters
2.Dog Heartworm and Flea tick
3.Run my finger over breakers to check for hot ones
4.Check ole what'ss'er names' car to see if it needs and oil change or fluids(she just drives)
