What spare parts would you take on an 800 mile drive?

Well I am taking my 75 to utah, it rund great, no leaks or drips, just had the rear main seal replaced along with a full tune up, as it sits now I am not worried about the drive, but you never know, besides the obvious belts and fluids, what else would you guys take on a 800 mile drive? Ill have my full tool set as well.

Waterpump, water, fuel pump and a spare tire with jack. And of course a good tool set, everything else can be bought on the road. Anything more than this you aint gonna fix on the side of the road. Give it a good once over before you turn out of your driveway.

A cell phone with a good charger!! A CB radio, either mounted or hand held. Also have some reflective warning devices in case you are on the side of the road at night.

For those of you who know my story: in order to retrieve my truck we flew from Michigan to Montana and then drove the truck back. I hadn't seen it (more than in passing) in 18 years, so I gave it a quick once over and we hit the road. I tell you what - I was praying when we accelerated onto the freeway that first time ("c'mon, baby....") but we had no problems the whole way back (approx 1700 miles).

The only issue was the dome light didn't work, and so I needed a flashlight in order to read the map, etc.

Oh, and it would have been nice if the cruise worked. Both have been fixed now

when I go on long trips in my truck, I bring a few gallons of water and some basic hand tools and common sockets. I have no idea why because I put more miles on my truck driving around town in a week than I do on any trip I take.

Better to have it and not need it I guess.

edit: As has been suggested, I do carry a handheld CB in the glove box. ya never know when or if you'll need it.

If you have parts to install then install them before you leave. Have good tires. 800 miles is no further now than it was in 1975.

Good spare tire
lug wrench
jack stand
good (Working!) jack and a sturdy board to sit the jack on if needed
spare belts hoses, and a spare plug wire (I always have those under the seat anyway)
jump box or cables
fuses
hand tools
A ready to drop in HEI, easier to swap distributors than fiddle with a module.
Since 3 of my trucks use HEI, I have spares.
Spare alternator.

I know these items are over kill but most everything will fit in a regular size duffel bag. I use a Harbor Freight aluminum jack, remove the 2 piece handle and the jack will fit in the bag as well.

The board for your jack can be a really big deal. Ever tried using a jack on hot asphalt or really soft dirt/grass?

Enjoy your trip! The trucks are no fun if you don't drive them!

I might be a little biased though since I have never owned a late model vehicle. I have been driving old stuff for 25 years.
I think a lot of people get nervous about driving more than a few hundered miles in a 30 year old car. even though they know like there own child. But it's perfectly normal to get in a 30 year old airplane that you know nothing about and fly thousands of miles.
just remeber, when you are in the middle of nowhere 90% of the noises you hear are in your head.
tires and overheating are your most common problems especially if it's hot out.

Oil, fluids, fuses and bulbs. Mine made it 1200 miles round trip. Only issue i blew out a brake shoe going from interstate speeds to ramp speeds. I'd do it again in a heart beat.

I always carry a spare HEI module, or if running points, a set of those along with a condensor.

Fuel filtre.

Metal wire and zip ties to secure things if necessary.

Coveralls or at least a piece of cardboard in case you have to crawl around underneath the truck.

Waterless hand cleaner and paper towels or rags.

Cash.

I have done two 600 mile drives in my 77 and didnt even take a jack, just depends if you are willing to take the risk and have faith in your truck.

I flew to Texas after buying my truck sight unseen. I took along a set of hand tools including box wrenches, 3/8" drive socket set, screwdrivers, etc. The truck had good tires, good spare, and bottle jack. With a fresh oil change and a check of all fluids i hit the road and drove 1,000 miles back home holding a steady 55mph. Only problem i had was the clutch slave cylinder failed in Pensacola and i finished the drive without a clutch. Good thing the SM465 is so easy to shift without it. Would i do it this way again, Definitly!

Sounds like everyone has it covered. Years ago, my '81 quit on me on the highway. Pulled over and found out there was no spark. Somehow or another the rotor had a small pin hole in it. Well, between the tow and replacement parts (not even new), it was a $120, but I was back on the road.

When I replace the belts, unless they're completely worn out, I'll keep them laying around if I need to limp it in somewhere.

Flares, triangles and a good flashlight can keep you safe in the event you do have to get under the hood.

I like S10 Fan's list best.
Add duct tape and a handful of zip ties. I also carry a can of brake cleaner, sure helps get the grease off of an area I need to work on. Mechanic's gloves, too.
Best way to make sure it won't break down is to carry everything. Leave one thing at home and she'll leave you stranded, needing just that one thing you decided to leave at home

Bring a new Transmission, u-joints and a power steering hose.

Duct tape and WD40.

If it moves and shouldn't use the duct tape. If it don't move and should use the WD40.
