84’ GMC 2500 camper special 2wd, rated at 8600 GVW makes it a 1-ton?
I am in the process of bring home a 79’ K-30 4X4 regular cab, SRW. My buddy is telling me his 1984 GMC 2500 is rated at 8,600 GVW & it has the 1-ton brake package equipment on it, therefore it is a 1-ton.
I am trying to explain to him from what I am learning on this forum, that his reasoning is off center. Who is right ? |

Is the rear a full float? If not then it's not a 1 ton or heavy 3/4. I can't remember the the GVWRs are for each, but probly is just bigger brakes and suspension. Also just because it does have that stuff doesn't make it a 1 ton. Measure your frame under the cab then do the same, they will be different. 1/2-3/4 frames 2wd-4wd are essentially the same, 1 tons both 2/4wd will have a 2" taller frame.

Thanks, I forgot about the floater, the K-30 does sit higher, have not had them side by side yet.
The K-30 has 16.5" tires, of which I plan to change ASAP. K-30 = 4WD GMC 2500 = 2WD |

Legally he can only tow what his truck is rated for so it is and always will be a 3/4 ton no matter what 1ton parts he puts on it.
