GMC vs CHEVY ???
I am new here and to body work .
I have a question and I have read for days on this forum and can not really understand or figure out the answers to these ???'s Are the cabs, cowls, and doors on all years 67 thru 72 GMC & CHEVY the same shape , size ,ect .? enterchangeable with each year ? I think I understand that the hoods and fenders did change shape from 69 to 70 ? How far off are the average aftermarket body parts from the original ? |

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
As far as I know, the cabs, cowls and doors are the same. GMC fenders are the same as the 67-68 Chevy. 68 and later GMCs having marker lights like a 68 Chevy. If I'm wrong someone will correct me but this is my understanding.

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
The 72 doors are slightly different than the earlier years, but are still essentially interchangeable with the others. I think the only differences are the length of the studs for the window and door handles, and there's an extra screw for the wing window on the inside.

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
Yes I forgot about the 72's doors, they will bolt up and fit but the details inside are different due to the plastic door panels.

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
Absolutely. It's common for people to swap their favorite front end on their 67-72 GM truck.

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
Ask about a specific interchange and we'll tell you what's involved.

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
For the most part yes parts interchange on all these models.
But there are differances in them as the 72 doors. To put a 67 front end on a 72 cab, yes u can do it but you need all of the 67 front end core support fenders hood everything.

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
Thanks guys , here is wat I got going on , a 72 GMC cab , and the whole front
of a 68 chevy in afternarket pieces from LMC ... I have got a lot of ajustment here to make this work as you can see in the pics ... the hood is not fitting or lineing up ... It looks like the hood has more arch to it, than the fenders ... |

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
First of all,did you get a 67/68 radiator core support and use the 67/68 mounts for it? Second, unfortunately the aftermarket parts are not made very well. The fenders are to flat on top and don't follow the contour of the hood. There's issues with matching the contour of the doors, too. It looks like you need to bring the cowl cover up. and the hood down. The hood springs may need a tweak and/or just adjustment mounting to the hood. Are you sitting on an original 4wd frame? Did you use 4wd cab cushions?

frame and cab , you are right about the aftermarket stuff not the same, i agree the match to the doors and cab not perfect but the hood i can not live with ... Will try some new hinges and tweak a little more ... I will probably try and get a stock hood without the cowl ... Or maybe just shop around for the original 72 front end parts ... That wat it all about for me , something to play with ... Thanks |

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
Yeah, the cowl hoods are tricky, some are better than others, even from the same supplier. If you start looking for a 67-68 flat hood I believe I have a couple.
I'm in Murray Ky Good luck, Rg

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
If you give up on the repro stuff, maybe find yourself some '68 Chevy/68-72 GMC fenders. At east then you'll have something good to eye the hood up with. If it still won't fit well enough, then go to original hood. We put together a '68 with all new sheetmetal clip, including cowl hood. This was "the good stuff" and we had similar problems. We got it pretty good after a lot of work, but the fenders are just not right. The only problem we had with the hood was at the back of the "rise" both sides were completely different. One went straight up and the other had a slant. How the heck does that pass? With hoods it doesn't take much for one to get tweaked in shipping/handling. They come from very far away, like about everything these days ):. Yours almost looks bowed up like the sides at the back are pinched in. Ain't it great?

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
Is the hood bolted down are just sitting there? The hood to cowl gap is way to close. U need about a 1/4" gad there and the hinges maybe holding the hood up. Does the cowl have any shims under it before it was bolted down?
As stated new metal parts are tuff to get good gaps and when I say good gaps I mean anything from 1/4" to 1/2" depending on what part it is with out body work. Good luck with it though and just take your time.

Re: GMC vs CHEVY ???
Keep in mind that the factory did not do a great job of alignment on these trucks when new.But certainly better than what you got.The adjustment and alignment of body panels is one of the things that make a big difference between a good looking truck and a great looking one. Also after 40+ years, there's some settling.tweaking etc. of a truck.Using parts from more tha one and/or aftermarket means they didn't "grow" together.
I don't think I have the patience or skill to do great bodywork.
