Frame swap - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I stopped and looked at a truck today that was for sale and the individual told me that his plans were to mount this 1967 Chevy shortbed on a 1999 chevy truck frame and stated that it had a much better frame.Upon inspection of the frame I noticed no damage the current owner then replied that all these trucks 1967-72 in particular had frames that flexed too much . My question is has anyone ever heard of this? I have worked on and modified these trucks for 30 years and have never experienced this ,am I missing something??

He is talking out his wazoo... All frames flex some what, it all depends on what you put the truck thru. That's why there is a such thing call suspension. I tested my suspension on my 94 Zr2 a little too much one day, flexed the frame and cracked it. A newer frame may be stronger than an older one. We advance in technology, what can I say.

Sounds to me he just wanted the advancements of today's trucks (suspension and steering) with out putting the work and money into the current frame. I chalk it up to him talking sewer out his mouth.

Well every now and then someone comes along who wants to reinvent the wheel .Without these individuals the rest of wouldn't have anyone to look at and say "what the heck did they do that for !!!"

Tell him he's right. In fact, the '67 is way too old to be any good. It doesn't have cup holders, air bags, disc brakes, 3rd brake light, or 5 mph bumpers... and gets terrible gas mileage. It's not even a crew cab! You would be doing him a favor to take the whole thing off his hands for $100.

If a later model makes for a better ride...then I got screwed. My '69 rode and drove WAAAAAAAY better than my '96. The suspension on the earlier one is the same design that NASCAR adopted for race cars. Check 'em out if you didn't already know. I wish I had a 4-link with coils on my '96 GMC.

I agree. I love the feeling of my 69 GMC. I will probably enjoy it even more when I get the rear coils replaced since they are old and collapsed in certain places. And I have not problem tucking it into curves, faster than some of the newer vehicles I have driven.

My 1971 GMC rides better than either of my wife's and my daily drivers. I think a lot of people either do not take the time to modify a truck right or they are simply too cheap to do it right. I just finished putting a TCI mustang II kit in my 55 pickup and can't wait to put it through the motions ,I wouldn't even consider mounting a cab on another model frame as I think that even the best jobs doing so still look cobbled up!
