My 72 is coming home - What about insurance?

I'll be driving my 1972 Super home next week from the body shop.

It's been a long 4 years.

What kinds of options do we have for insurance on these vehicles? I haven't had any insurance on it while it was torn down and being built. Now that I've dumped all this time and money into a project how can I insure it for the true value should the unthinkable happen?

if it's a driver - limited options, and you probably want full coverage of course since you just sunk a ton of cash into it. If NOT a DD, then I'd recommend Grundy, have had good luck with them. Several caveats, must be stored in a garage, cannot be your primary vehicle, etc.

You are required to park it in a garage, storage unit, or something equally fit. You can't drive it over a certain amount of miles a year. Can't tow anything.

There are benefit's with them though, such as a parts coverage for break down and tow truck coverage, and they cover car show cost (or something to that affect). I pay $119 a year for mine and it is covered for I think $10,000 right now.

I had to provide a pic with it in the garage or in front. They used the pictures to value it. I am almost on my 3rd renewal and haven't had to do anything other than pay them and send a signed policy back.

Hagerty is decent too. Tell them how much it's worth, fill out some info and send them some pics and your done. They have a cool "under construction" policy also, which is what I have my truck under currently. You tell them what its worth currently and they bump its value/coverage 3% (I think) every month until you tell them to stop. I have my Chevelle with them also.

This is a general question for those you don't have a garage or one big enough to park it in, and for those that there trucks aren't quite garage quality to care enough to park it in there.

Does Hagerty require you to store your vehicle in a garage?

If I remember correctly, you tell them what you expect to drive in a year, how far you plan to go away from home (towing allowance), and where you plan to keep the vehicle. I don't think it had to be garaged but I would think your premium would be based on that. You can get a quote online but they contacted me both times for additional information and pictures of its current condition.

They all require a garage or storage unit, no place to put it, no insurance.

No, and you tell them how much to want it insured for (agreed value)
Like others said they want it stored inside and you have to have another vehicle

I had to file a claim one time and they were great to deal with.

What kind of claim did you have to file? There is no limit on mileage per year? So I can drive 12,000 miles / year if I wanted to do so?

When you filed your claim did they ask about mileage, storage, etc?

I don't plan on driving my truck all that much, but I never know when I may get the urge to throw some fishing poles in the back and drive to a distant lake.

i had a right front blow out going about 75 on I-95, kinda scary for a second or two. However the tire messed up the fender, paint and moldings. The body shop said they could fit it for what the adjuster offered with no problems. Was fast and easy. On another vehicle once i had a rock chip my windshield, they sent me a ck almost immediately, after it was fixed it cost like $10.00 more than they gave me. I sent them a copy of the bill and they paid the difference.

No mileage limits, agreed value, inside storage, can not tow anything and must have another vehicle. I have mine insured at $35,000 and they had no problem with that value. Not sure exactly how much it is since i have multiple vehicles with them.

Find their website for accurate and up to date info. Haggerty is who I use,too,and it was a simple process. I can't remember why now,but I looked at the others and liked them the most and went that way.

When I got mine thru American Collector's, they asked for a picture of it in front or in the garage. It is supposed to be stored inside, but during the summer months it spends most of it's time outside and covered up when not being driven. Need to find me a place I can store it cheap so I can free up my garage...lol

I'm with american collector , I told them what I felt my truck was worth . They agreed after pics . I paid quote . Limited miles, enclosed garage etc , and nothing hauled in bed . I have only bn with several months , so experience on claims or anything like that.

They told me I couldn't tow anything with it, but the rep didn't say anything about not hauling anything in the bed when I asked. Just can't tow anything. I will have to read the policy over to check on that. I have a bed full of parts I keep stored in my bed under the fiber glass tonneau cover. I did like the how I valued my own truck to them, and from the pics they told me what they would value it at. Great customer service.

I just signed up with Hagarty also. $35K full coverage (agreed value), 0 deducable, lockable garage storage, 5K mileage limit and I am allowed to tow my restored Scotty camper to shows etc. So it just depends on individual wants/needs and what you can get them to agree to I guess. At first they didn't want to let me pull the Scotty until I said "Ok, thanks. I'll find someone that will as I see these at shows all the time". The agents response: "Wait, I uuu, let me see here...oh, ok...yes, we can do that. Just to shows. "And camping" I said. "Camping?" The agent said. "Yes...its a camper". "Oh, I see" she said "Ok....that will be ok, is there anything else?" "No thats all, thanks". And that was it, done deal.

Hagerty only expects you to drive your collector only 2000-3000 miles a annually. You have to watch the underwriting guide lines and fine print. I talked to one of there rep's on there online chat. And referred me to this link: http://www.hagerty.com/classic-car-a...is-limited-use

I haven't put 500 miles on my truck yet since I have had my insurance (partly cause I am always adding something to make it better). But I like having a set mileage of 7500 miles called Freedom Tier Plan which means I can use my truck for more general transportation more often. Though, I don't expect to with 3 daily drivers sitting in the drive way.

There are several companies to go thru. I suggest calling, getting quotes, ask them what and what you can not do. Then go with the best quote to coverage and driving style. I did a lot of calling before I choose who I went thru. I only found one company out of around 7 I called, that the rep gave me there personal office number to so I could get my questions answered by the same person. Then she gave me her email address for sending the required pictures, instead of sending thru the site email. That's the customer service I look for.

Good luck finding a insurance company.

I must have a different type policy with them (Hagerty). I have 3 vehicles with them and I've never ever had to give them any mileage info. Usually on limited mileage policy's you have to give them your mileage every year at renewal time.

Maybe I should ask them if it's cheaper to have a mileage deal... heck, i'd change in a heart beat to save some money.

Yeah, I am always checking around to see who will give me the better rates, coverage, and such. I don't think I will hit my mark of mileage, but who knows... Might hit the lotto and decide to drive it to as many event as I can...lol

I renew my policy online (American Collector's). I get the paperwork, sign it and return it. I do have the option of changing my policy when they send the paper work. But I can just do it online, not sure that it would drop my $119 a year payment buy much though. I will have to check around March time frame.
