Re: i need speakers for my '86
The rear speakers are indeed an odd size, 4x10 from the factory. Replacement, particularly of a higher performance variety is difficult to say the least if you wanted to upgrade.
That said, we on the board are highly fortunate that one of our members has been making a replacement rear corner bracket set that allows you to install a pair of the plentiful and easy to find 6 x 9 speakers in their place, with a minimum of modifications and they look at fit GREAT. Look in the 73-87 parts for sale forum for his thread to see pictures and more information on them |

Also with the angled prefab 6x9 boxes (bought almost anywhere) setting on the floor you can still get your seat all the way back and most of the speaker is open to the front.

Re: i need speakers for my '86
In my 86 I have:
two 12" subs in a sealed box behind the seat two 6x9's in sealed box's behind the seat situated on each side of the sub box two 4" speakers in the dash amp under the seat the system is very good. no problems with seat belt or subs kicking the seat. I had the same setup in my other 86 pickup too... these trucks are SO EASY to install audio systems in... js Good Luck with yours!

Re: i need speakers for my '86
I put a 4" loudspeaker in the center....and two tweters at each corner of the dash in place of the factory 3.5's. Then I put 6" midbass speakers on each door bottom....more to come though.....

Re: i need speakers for my '86
I just put some 5.25 in the bottom of my doors... What a hassle that was... I've got power windows and didn't expect all these supports and crap behind there... And then I see trucks with 6x9's in the same spot??? I have no idea how they would have done that unless manual window have a lot more room in the door?
Anyway I put a MTX amp matched with a JL Audio 8" Microsub box behiund the seat and it slams like a 12 |

Re: i need speakers for my '86
6x9's are awesome, but most companies also sell brackets that convert 4x10 mounting points into two 4" points.
Also story, I'm about to get a pair of JL 6.5" subs to go under the seat. They sound amazing for how small they are!

Re: i need speakers for my '86
The 6" midbass speakers at my door bottoms have their own enclosure....they mount on the door but does not protrude into the door shell. I pulled mine from a wrecked '07 Caddy CTS and they are Bose 2-ohm speakers. They sound great when getting pushed hard by a PPI amp!

Re: i need speakers for my '86
I personally wouldn't go with that old outdated 4x10 size. There is a reason they're not common anymore. The shape itself doesn't produce the sound quality of more modern sizes so it was done away with.
