Re: 1964 dually
Some more pix. There is alot i would like to do to the truck but the more i look at it the more i just want to leave it alone. I think the truck might need a tranny. Any body want to part with a SM465?

Re: 1964 dually
Should be a fairly easy trans to find. So many people pulling them for automatics

Re: 1964 dually
you would also need the 68 and up bellhousing to put a sm 365 in due to the larger input brg retainer

Re: 1964 dually
So i bought a SM465. It looks like its in really good shape. It is complete. I was just wondering how big of a pain in the ass will it be to put in my 64. Will the bell housing bolt right up and what clutch should i use?

Re: 1964 dually
Should be same bellhousing as your 3speed. Clutch would be probably 11"

Re: 1964 dually
The SM465 will not bolt up to your bellhousing. This is because the front bearing retainer is a larger diameter than the center hole in the bellhousing. You will need a bellhousing from a '68-'72 truck. I would go with a 12" clutch if your flywheel will accept one. Otherwise a 11" will work.

Re: 1964 dually
That is awesome to see it working like it was meant to. I'm with you, I'd just leave it alone and use it. Very nice truck. Why do you think you need a new trans? Is it popping out of gear? I'm guessing it's got an SM420 now?

I Was not at home when my brother and dad picked the truck from the PO. When i arrived at home a few weeks later the first thing i did was drove it. It works great! The tranny is fine and it starts every time no problem. I have no plans do anything to the truck except drive it. It needs a few things It will pull my 3.5 ton dump trailer loaded with no problems. When i get home in a few weeks i will be changing the oil and looking for new tires. The best truck i have had in years. |

Re: 1964 dually
That's how they did the 1 ton and up trucks. Why GM did I don't know. My C30 motor home is the same way.
That is a great looking truck. Now I have to decide which is better looking, the truck or the wife? I hope you treat them both well. Posted via Mobile Device
