MY6 New Process A-883
I need help on an MY6 New Process A-883. What type of oil does it use? Trannys were used around 85-86. Does anyone have an owners manual to check?

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
I have an NP833, but I am using regular 80w-90 gear oil after researching. I'd be curious to know if the owner's manual has something else.

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
It uses ATF.
I can check to see what the owner manual says and report back - K Quote:

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
My 1969 Dodge Polara 500 has a refitted A833 using pedals from a 69 Fury. I use GL4 80W90 gear oil. It's the factory fill in the 1969 Fury I pulled it from.
There's an article in Mopar Muscle about this. http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/t...r/viewall.html That being said. Keith has direct information from GM engineering about the care and feeding of the GM MY6 variant of the A833.

I used the Amsoil recommended in this article and it shifts smoothly.

Thank you; btw - here is a link to a pretty good article that I refer to on occasion:

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
Not to hijack this thread, but I was just reading that article on CustomClassicTrucks website and considering finding an A883 transmission for my 1964 c10. I will be putting a rebuilt 1968 327 in it soon and would really like an OD trans.
To put one of these A883/MY6 transmissions behind a small block do I need to find one out of a Chevy ? Or could I use the Mopar version? If so, do you use the mopar bell housing mounted to the sbc? Any additional info would be a big help. THanks. |

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
Another link with some info...
http://www.classicjunkyard.com/new_process_a833.htm Pretty sure you need the chevy bellhousing and the chevy version. i put one behind a GMC V6. They have a specific bellhousing, but using the Classic Truck article and this link as a guide, I was able to do it. Be advised that some of the Classic Trucks article photos and captions do not jive and may not make sense.

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
I bought my NP833 without the bellhousing, but got lucky and found one. There are two types, one has the gm pattern, and the other which I believe is more common literally has a mopar bolt pattern on the left side and gm on the right. I was able to locate one in a junkyard far away through the interwebs but that was a miracle...also keep in mind the bearing retainer OD is different than GM, so technically you could use a GM bellhousing with the standard pattern NP833 but you'd have to machine the retainer opening. The junkyard guy who had mine also claimed there were some hydraulic clutch versions without the clutch ball boss...not sure about that but who knows. Also, the shifter is a Hurst unit but the linkages are special as is the base. The only way I'd buy another one of these is complete. I believe all of this was covered in the articles mentioned above, just giving you my Cliff's Notes.

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
Hey MUsicMan, thanks for that link! I just read through it and it has some really good info on this swap. I agree, that CCT thread is pretty confusing with the pics not matching the words, I had a couple head scratching moments before realizing what was up. haha
Thanks for the pics and advice Leevon, after building an old triumph part by part, I seriously OD'd on searching around trying to piece things together bolt by bolt. I agree, best to just find a GM unit that is complete and go from there. Might take me a while but sounds like a better option than a T5. |

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
Chrysler originally specified ATF. I've always used 80w-80 gear oil with no shifting problems. Do make sure you have the linkage adjusted correctly with the correct linkage hooked up....they differ between B bodies and E bodies so it's possible to get a frankenstein trans setup.

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
Hey guys thanks again for the advice on this trans. I ended up buying one off ebay yesterday that comes complete with bell housing, shifter, linkages, so I'm hoping is a pretty straight forward swap.
Wondering if I will need to fabricate a custom rear cross member to support the tailshaft of this trans? My truck is a 1964 c10. |

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
Keith, I can totally relate to your story LOL. Although I've never called my one of 'em a PIG they have heard a few choice words in the garage. It seems like whenever I'm out there my wife likes to take a nap, next thing you know little ones are running in the street with scissors!

If it was the same one I saw, yes it was very complete. I have 61 suburban and the original SM420 did not require a crossmember. I used this one from Ebay and cut it down to fit, but I'm sure there are other ones as well. Your frame is different than mine.

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
Thanks for the info Henry. My sm420 (sm465?) also has no rear crossmember. How much is that crossmember kit?It looks good but I might try to weld something up if it isn;t too complicated. Is there some kind of hard rubber between the trans and crossmember to absorb vibration/shock.
Thanks again. Dan |

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
Think it was around 50$ maybe more. I don't weld so I bought this and cut it down. I have the X-frame. I used this Energy Suspension mount.

Nice! Thanks for the pic, that really clears it up. I'll do some looking around for a similar setup or at least use the ES mount to make one.

Re: MY6 New Process A-883
Anybody know where I can find a GM tailshaft housing for a NP440? Got a 4wd version, and was wanting to use it in my 69C20. Thanks, and not trying to hijack thread- seems to be some good info here from those who have actually dealt with the np440/a883
