Spare Tire Dilemna
I know lots of us have moved our fuel tanks to underneath rear...where spare tire used to be carried, inconspicuously. What can we do about carrying a spare now? either same as on the ground OR space-saver? I don't like the looks of it thrown into the finished bed like an "Oh my, I almost forgot that!"
How about some kool ideas? |

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
Since my truck rarely ventures far from home, for several years I just carried a can of Inflataspare in the glove box. I figured if that wouldn’t get me home I’d call AAA. Subsequently we’ve decided to take some longer trips, so I went back to carrying a spare clamped to the right front bed floor with a Camaro bracket and j bolt. Of course in my truck this is hidden under the hard cover.

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
Did the stepsides have the 'In-The-Bed' mount as the fleets did?

The rear has 3-4" lowering coils in back. Also these rims are used with 1.5" spacers so taking the rear tires off requires two jacks; one under the diff and one under the tow-hitch to slightly raise the body. I may go back to the original 15's and be done with these as that would solve that issue. The hoist unit is a Toyota truck item, late 80's i think. I like the chain instead of the cable because I'd heard stories of cables snappiIg and tires dragging. I got a lot of this from the big RV-ers. They do this modification as well using an electric hoist. The tire is a 235 x 70 x 16. I placed some bumper-spacers to leave space enough for the crank-bar to fit in(for raising and lowering).

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
Thanks to all & for all the ideas. MusicMan70, I esp. like your 'burb setup--cool recess in that tank to allow the nice chain fall adaptation. Too bad I lucked up on a plain alum. cell at the salvage yard for $20: it is symmetrical w/o a recess
My truck is (was) finished, later model steel bed grafted in and rhino'd, but now looks like I'm gonna have to modify a tad & install an 'inverted wheel tub' in one corner for hauling a spare--thanks, 62 Longbed, for the idea & pic. Prolly gonna use one of those space-savers from the '80's in the process. Last edited by luvbowties; 10-31-2012 at 07:02 PM. Reason: added acknowlgmt. |

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
No, that was a fleetside option only as far as I know. I imagine that it'd be possible to install one w/some mods.

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
blessed66...what he's refering to is the fleetsides had a spare tire mount that mounted inside the bed, not under.

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
I don't carry a spare. We have AAA road, service bout 100 bucks a year covers all our vehicles. Motorhome, car, three trucks and two motorcycles. all towing, tire replacement, breakdowns and overnite expenses if you are stranded. Also availible from Good Sam rv club, Harley Davidson and others

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
Would be easy to install a spare tire tub and the fleetside mount in a stepside.

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
Has anyone adapted one of the later model cable, crank type, under bed carriers for our years of truck?

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
Mount Your Spare Tire in the Bed :
If your decide to take your gas tank out of the cab and mount one underneath the bed, you'll have to find somewhere else to put your spare tire. Here's one idea that just might do the trick. It comes from Ryan Miller. This article shows a '67-'72 truck bed but the same thing has been done on the '60-'66 beds. This spare tire carrier will only work in a long-bed Fleetside truck. This was done with a steel floor but can be done with a wood bed as well. The carrier fits a stock 235-75X15 tire or any tire that is under 29" tall. A Fleetside wheel well was located at a local boneyard for $25. The well was cut and welded as shown in the picture to shorten it so it would fit between the tailgate and the wheel well in the truck. If you have access to a wheel well for a wood bed, it can be used so that you have a flange to be able to bolt it into place for those who have wood beds. |

Re: Spare Tire Dilemna
plenty of 50's-60's chevy cars had bolt in versions in the trunks. be easier than modifying a wheelwell. just cut and bolt in
