How do you keep the windows from fogging?

Well, it's monsoon season again in Oregon. That means it's humid. The windows in my truck are ALWAYS fogged over and it is driving me insane. The defroster is almost completely worthless. (No A/C) Yesterday I cleaned all the glass and applied Fog X, and it didn't do squat.

How do you guys keep your windows clear? Is there anything that can be done to the defroster to make it work better? (or maybe is there something wrong with mine?) Are there any other products to keep fog off the glass...that actually work?

I've always had the heater on high/defrost and when/if the windows start to fog up (usually beacause of yakity yak women in the ride who don't know how to shut up ) I just crack open the window just a hair. after a few minutes ....all clear.

I have the wing windows croaked open and the tops just a bit. Otherwise I wait for the engine to get just a lil warm

This is a big part of my problem, my truck never gets warm! I drive about 3 miles to my shop to work, just getting warm when I get there. Then it gets cold again, and I drive a few miles to get something to eat. Then it gets cold again and I have to drive home!

Not just the glass, but my mirrors too! Surely I've run over 3 or 4 hobos by now!

I think I might try a 12v electric heater. I'll need a bigger alternator though. I wonder if I could mount some sort of heat pad inside my big dumbo mirrors?

Do you start your truck before you leave? I usually give it 15 minutes but since I don't have a defroster, I have to let the cab warm up through the bottom vents. I try to keep he window right in front of the steering wheel really clean and it usually defrosts before everything else. Even without the heater on the engine will defrost the small section in the middle of my windsheild.

Re: How do you keep the windows from fogging?

To help speed motor warm up when it’s not cooperating (short drive…ect) I block ½ the radiator with cardboard, a trick I have used since 1968 back the in days before global warming… & no AC when I used to drive my 49’ GMC long Bed ¾ ton.

The only thing I have found to keep Oregon fog off windows is a towel, in the winter when it gets really bad I will use a small heater/ thermostat (BI-Mart) to keep the inside warm and the air dry overnight.

But to be honest as fourth generation native & and at almost six decades I have not found nothing that will keep Oregon fog off of anything

a/c is what defrosts the windows

Re: How do you keep the windows from fogging?

Is your engine temp warming up to normal? I would check the thermostat first.Any of my old square will have the cab to room temp 20-25 deg C in about 5 minutes in 0 deg c outside temp no problem. As far as the a/c helping with defrost is wrong, cause I have 5 old squares, non with a/c and they ALL defrost the windows in a matter of minutes below freezing. My old 86 will have you cooking in the cab 5 minutes down the road at -30 degC with the fan on low....Check your thermostat first, maybe your heater core is plugged too,is one heater hose warm, but the other cold??

Re: How do you keep the windows from fogging?

LOL. In the Jeep CJ world we swap in a blower motor from a squarebody GM truck. No A/C in most CJ's (and those that do have it it's bolted to the dash so no way to defrost with it), so you just blow hot air on the windshield to defrost. The blower motor from a squarebody (part PM102 at Autozone) blows more air on low than my stock Jeep CJ blower did on high.

Let the truck warm up, put defrost on high with heat cranked up all the way. Might check and make sure all your ductwork is sealed up too. Leaks will send your air everywhere except the glass

Re: How do you keep the windows from fogging?

AC is use in defrost because in order to cool a room you need to first remove moisture, hence moisture = fog when it's cold outside

Re: How do you keep the windows from fogging?

There were lots of these old squares sold up in this part of the country with no a/c and they worked ok to defrost the window.....I have drove a square since 1981,Never had an issue with defrost as long as the truck was warmed to normal operating temp..Didn't matter if it was winter or raining,so back to my original post that you don't need a/c to defrost the window........

I guess you can believe what you want to believe....I am just telling you what I have found running these trucks for 30 years ,fog, frost whatever if your windshield is warm it will clear without a/c......Like I said before there were and probably still lots of these trucks up here without air,and yes the windshield can be kept fog free......

Re: How do you keep the windows from fogging?

My engine never seems to get very hot, a little less than half on the temp gauge max, though I put in a new 195 degree thermostat about 6 months ago. I do have a big block radiator/fan and no fan clutch though, probably would help if I replace that monster with an electric fan.

I'm thinking about using a block heater, even though it doesn't get all that cold here. I'd have to start parking somewhere else at home though to hook up to power...

Re: How do you keep the windows from fogging?

Number 21,Your temp gauge in the cab might be off a bit too,if you can get a temp shot just below your thermostat to see how hot your engine is.If you don't have a heat gun, pull your T stat, throw it in a pot of water and let it come to a boil with a meat thermometer in the water as well to see what temp the stat is opening. My crew is doing the same thing, not moving off cold and not much heat coming into cab, stat is stuck open.Far as your non clutch fan,I don't think it would make that much difference,it's not like your in -20 to -30 deg weather.Hope this helps.....

It does not matter if someone backs you up the truth is what i said. Defrost is designed to run the ac compressor to remove the moisture from the cab, that is why rolling down the window on a cold night helps. Not what i beleive just the truth and alittle the called fundamentals

This is true, and was designed this way, but the ambient temp. and the humidity play a huge role in whether or not it is even efficient. It only helps it, that is why a non a/c truck's defroster works just fine, maybe not as quick in some circumstances but never the less works fine.

Re: How do you keep the windows from fogging?

Also setting your H-controls to fresh air input and not reticulating air can help.

And we are talking about “Oregon Fog” remember fellows Oregon is the state where “Fog Lines” were invented.

A fog line is the white line painted on the right side of the road. It is used as a tool for drivers to keep on the road in areas of heavy fog.
