Anyone with a 700r4 column shift

I currently have a cheap floor shift for my new 700r4 but would like to have a column shift. I was wondering if you could adapt a column from an auto truck of our years to accommodate the 4 gears? I am trying to stay period in my truck so I am trying to avoid newer columns.

mine is hooked up to the original column. park and reverse line up with the indicator letters. From there it doesn't line up exactly.

Can you shift into the lower gears okay?

I have a 72 tilt with a column and it works fine, used Lokar linkage from column to tranny.

Re: Anyone with a 700r4 column shift

I have no indicators for the gears on my 700r4, it is not a problem with a tach and by feel one can tell what gear the truck is in........I would try a stock shifter column, the shifter shaft and flat plates that move the shifter linkage would probably work.... has anyone done that. ??

A new chrome bezel and indicator lens is available to replace the stock PRNDL.

Re: Anyone with a 700r4 column shift

I have a stock 66 column and am using the Lokar rod linkage. I had to make one small bend to clear the firewall. The linkage is adjusted to it's longest length and just using the lower set screw. I also tacked the rod with a welder a few times to be sure it was solid. However, I don't think that was necessary. Park and drive line up, (drive is OD) and I am able to drop into 1st with no problem.

Re: Anyone with a 700r4 column shift

I got this column from a late 70's van. It was really a camper van and it even has a cruise control button if I decide to venture into that later on. It is a 3 speed tilt column and will shift the 700R4 easy. I had another in the truck for 4 years before scoring this one on a 25% off sale at pick and pull. Cost me a whole $28.

Re: Anyone with a 700r4 column shift

I have a stock auto column waiting to replace the 3 speed column. Good to know it will all work out with it. Honestly though, even in your daily drivers, does anybody still look at the indicator?? I know I dont... One down is reverse, three down is drive... its all in the feel
