Restored my back bumper for next to nothing

Here's a before shot of my bumper. It was rusty, and the trailer hitch balls were odd sizes I don't need, and were rusted as well.

Here's the paint I used. The primer is very good, and is intended to treat heavy rust.

Here's the completed bumper, with new hitch ball. I'm very pleased. Total cost, including the new ball: less than $30. And, I hardly used any of the paint, so I have lots left for other projects.

Next up for the back, new tail light lenses and new tail light and tailgate trim

Yeah, he loves it. His two favorite words are truck and bacon. When he hears those, his ears perk up.

Sweet results. How much sanding/rust removal did you do before painting?

There weren't any loose rust flakes or anything, and the bumper was so rough as it was (as a surface for paint to adhere to) I basically just cleaned it. The primer is designed to go directly over rust. It literally soaked in like a sponge, and went on really well.

Huge difference and a great use of resources. Great work, and I also dig the dog.

looks great - very closely matches the factory tone for the optional step bumper. Paint type and # noted!! Thanks for posting. How did you apply it? Thin and spray or just brush it on? What kind of brush (if you brushed it). Turned out very nice.

Hey thanks. I just used a wide foam brush that would fit in the can. Bought two of them for .99 cents each. Used one for the primer, and one for the silver.

Yeah, and the beauty is that I only had to mask one thing, and that was the license plate light.

One more thing... These cans of paint look larger in the picture than they are. They are really small. Got them at Lowes for like $9 a can

Very nice. I was looking to put an original step bumper on my 3/4, but the ones I find are rough. Now I have hope.

Well, interesting you'd ask. I decided I would just paint it, and if the two cracks bugged me enough, I'd use some body filler. I felt up underneath, and it doesn't go all the way through. So, I just made sure to put plenty of silver paint down in the cracks, and it masked it really well.

And, yes. Very anxious to do the bed. I've already got plenty of primer left, at least for the bed. I'll need to buy some additional white paint, and try to have them match the blue for me. My son and I are going to prep the bed this weekend

Excellent! Looks great! Very "original" look.

I have been thinking about the same thing. I have a similar bumper, and it needs a good touch up.

Thanks for posting!
