The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
First it seems that I saw a lot of builders spending as much or more on a fake patina paint job (maybe they saw it on "Trucks" like I did). Then i start seeing WTB ads from people looking for original paint parts. Now I have had someone contact me wanting me to sell a from clip off a running driving truck!
I have been building old cars and trucks as a hobby for over 20 yrs. I have purchased several wrecked trucks and rebuilt them. I always try to track down original sheetmetal, not giving any notice to color. I then had the parts painted to match or painted the whole vehicle. I admit there is no harm in putting and ad out looking for the part in the color needed, but after a year (!) c'mon! It's time to wake up and realize it time to break out the paint gun. I saw and ad on the parts forum that is looking for a Swb fleet bed in a particular color. I cannot even find a decent Swb fleet bed in any color that is under $1000 ( in relatively dry central Texas)! I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, this is just my opinion, but it's time to wake put to the reality that you aren't going to be able to pick and choose original 40 + year old parts Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
There are still alot of trucks out there so anything is possible. There are simply some folks who can't afford paint for their project and that is why they have chosen the patina route. I have a truck and a burb that are both wearing original paint and will stay that way for a good while. I can't afford over 10 grand easily to paint them.

We are doing all our own work and will only have about $400 in the paint job on my '67 swb steeper. Of course that is just for the paint and primer. My son has all the equipment needed to paint it. We got the primer and paint from Summit. My son has a '71 that has 7 different colors on it, it is what he calls his work truck.

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
Couldn't agree more... the patina and "rat rod" fad is getting passe`. Like you said. I'm not ryin' to step on anyones toes... but it's my opinion as well.
Especially when cats are asking for rediculous prices for vehicles with original faded paint and rust. Seriously? Paying more for crappy paint and rust is loco. My truck has it's original faded pain, rust, and dents... bought it that way for $800 bones. When I can afford it, and have the time... it will be fixed and painted. But for now... it's the way it is. Driving a $500 dollar rusty hulk with worn out seats and a straight six will always have some coolness to it. But when cats are asking $5,000 dollars for the same truck nowadays for "patina"... whatever. Gary

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
You want to know what's funny is when people can't tell the difference between patina and a peeling repaint. My truck was painted many many years ago and is starting to peel in various places and I get compliments ALL the time about how nice my patina is. I'm like thanks? At least people think its cool while I save up for a paint job

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
i don't think your opinion should hurt anyone's feelings. i think there are a lot of reasons for the attraction to "patina":
1) they are getting rare, and anything rare has higher demand 2) no hidden poor body work 3) they make good sleepers 4) much cheaper than expensive paint jobs as mentioned if you think about it though, none of these apply to a faux patina...

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
I see nothing wrong with "patina". IMO it is silly to go out of your way and spend extra time and money, or have your truck down for long periods in pursuit of said "patina". I have a 70 longhorn 400 BB with a very clean original paint patina cab and clip. The bed has seen better days, so I am swapping the cab clip and engine to a Swb frame. The truck was wrecked and I swapped a 70 hood and 71 grill and bumper I had. I am going to paint the hood to match the truck myself, and the rest of the truck will stay as is. Nobody (including me) says you have to have a $10k paint job. Maybe I should pay someone $1k to match the hood to the cab. NOT

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
I drove mine for 23 years with it's original paint job. It was thin in areas and shined in others. Regardless I washed & waxed that thing. I took the best care I could. My friends thought I was nuts. I couldn't afford to fix it up back then. Seven years ago I restored & painted it. I enjoy it today no differently than when I bought it. I can't say that I'd spend money to make a truck look old but to each is own. For those that go that route I'd say all the more power to you. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of your truck as I have mine over the years.

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
This is just like a 1967-1972 orignal truck are 67-72 custom truck question. Which one is better. Neither one is better in my opinion it's all in the eyes of who is looking at it and what they like. There both there for a reason we all like differant things.

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
Personally, I love patina trucks/cars. I hope the fad never ends.
I have a 1st Gen Dodge Cummins that I restored and painted nice base coat clear coat. I still love the truck but every time I drive it, I'm scared to death I might scratch it.

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
I kind of like the whole patina fad, but I agree I'm not sure I would spend a bunch of money to make it look that way. My Blazer had a crappy repaint at some point before I bought it. I love the original color which you can see on the inside where it's in very nice shape. I could repaint it, but then I wouldn't want to use the Blazer how it was intended to be used. If I add to the collection I'll be looking for a nice short bed truck with original paint.

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
I recently took my two daughters to a car show. We stood there looking at two basically identical trucks. Motors rebuilt, interior redone, wheels, tires, etc. The only difference was one had a brand new shiny paint job and the other had the patina clear coated. Both were for sale for about the same amount.
My youngest said it was just like going to the store and buying jeans with holes in them or buying jeans without holes. Cost for either runs about the same. Either way. Im just glad to see the trucks out there to be seen. Not just rotting away or sent to the crusher. Just because someone slaps a big price tag on something doesn't mean they always get it. New or patina. |

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
As someone who is going for a flat paint job, and a total paint job.....
Its just like candy paint on low riders. Its like rust on rat rods. Its like rattle can jobs on greasers. Its like new paint and new car for people who trade in their cars every 4 years for a new one. Different people like different things. I like it. Hell...I like all of em...just depends on the cars. |

I like civil discourse . With that being said , Most threads on this subject get heated and wind up closed . Please keep this civil .
Personally I like and appreciate nearly all of the paint and non paint styles , Even the dirty trucks . Think I have owned nearly every type of paint style . At the moment this is my daily driver . It serves me as it is . Really think any type of paint work would help this . Faux , shiny or flat . |

I will take Patina any day.
Don't have to wax it, polish it, powerwash it and go. Yeehaw!

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
I agree its getting way out of hand.
On a side note, So anyone found me a SWB bed in a light blue top and bottom with white in the middle, black trim top and bottom for $500 yet? light patina would be great.

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
I probably don't rate an opinion since I'm painting mine satin black, but the high dollar fake patina is silly to me. I think it looks really cool but I just can't see spending that kind of coin on it.

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
I used to love pretty trucks until mine was one. Then come the scratches and knicks and door dings. My truck was flat black for almost 10 years. I almost think I enjoyed it more than did I did after I painted it. I didn't have to hide it from people or "be careful" with it.
I posted a thread not too long ago about "ruining" my truck. I don't want rust, etc, but I want to put a color "primer" coat under a new paint job, and rub it down to look flat and worn. The flat will hide light dings, scratches will blend into the weathered "look" and I'll feel I can use my truck like I want to. I also really want a shop style truck. I have a 65 mustang that's a show car, it's enough of a pain in the ass to clean and baby sit that. I can see both sides of it. The Patina fad is NOTHING new, when I was growing up instead of calling it a patina truck we called it a "beater". In a perfect world I would have a fully restored 67 parked next to a cool beater 67 (rust free of course) but if I had to choose, I'd go with a clean beater now a days...

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
I'm in the real either way catagory.I wouldn't spend the $$$ to make it look worse than when I started.I don't want show quality but a nice Driver is about perfect. If I'm gonna drive it,it will get dings and such.If it's show quality then I would cringe every time someone got within 15 ft of it.I also don't want one I'm afraid to drive.Andy 4639 has a perfect truck and mentality to me.He has a very nice truck that looks good, drives good, has creature comforts, but he drives it a lot so it does have some road marks but nothing that detracts from the looks or function.

I don't like fauxtina personally, but I do like the analogy of buying distressed jeans. But then again, stone washed jeans were all the rage for a while.
I miss the days when my burb had worn out paint, and the hood and fenders the paint was burned off by the years and elements. I think I am more tired of the word "patina" than anything else...

Yes I had my truck painted and I at first was some what worried about the paint but not enough to keep me from driving it. I drive it regularly and yes they get dings and scratches so what is the differance between a nice paint job with scratches and dings from a truck that is so called patina! Nothing! If you paid good hard earned money for this so called patina paint job then OK that's your choice. I just choose to do it the old fashion way by earning it as I do everything in life. I want to earn the patina look not buy it! Anybody can buy it!

Re: The "patina" fad is getting out of hand!
My truck is a beater. I paid $950 for it and the only reasons I did that was because it was a 69 GMC ( thats what my first truck was ), it has a coil sprung rear ( easier in my opinion to lower ), and it has a crate engine with about 10,000 miles on it. Basicaly I bought a crate engine with a patina'd, rusty body attatched. I have almost walked away from messing with cars/trucks all together because I don't have the funds to build the customs or original type vehicles and it kills me but these rusty patina'd trucks keep me cruising so I will keep buying them. I will never spend money to make one look crappy though, I have had enough of those so I would spend the money on making it shiney if I had it.
Side note: I have seen elsewhere on the forum that shop logos are way overdone as well. I do my trucks with them so that they don't look way to out of place at shows like Good Guys. I weather the lettering to match the rest of the junk but people love it and it has got me some business lettering and weathering other patina'd trucks. Money in my pocket and in my truck.
