what to do 1970 chevy k20

alright guys im at a point i dont know what to do.

working on this 1970 k20 i just got and i am finding all this stuff that doesnt match.

what does match:
frame
cab
tranny ( WHICH as a PTO i dont if thats good or not!)
motor

What doesnt match
rear end (corporate 14 bolt)
front end( has disc brakes)
front clip and body all excpet the cab

not sure what to do when i go get parts i dont know that to tell them
i cant say i got a 1970 K20 truck and get parts when i got differnt stuff on it.

i dont want to switch the rear end or the front end (im glad it has disc brakes) but not sure what to do... any ideas?? i think ill return it to a 1970 body but leave the front brakes and different rear end. AND the pto i wont use but kind of cool it has it.

by the way it came out with factory lockout tho.

I don't think I would change the front or rearends either, and I like the idea of changing the front body stuff to '70. Looks like a great project!

Leave the axles, they are the least of your worries.

Those axles are upgrades...be happy about it.

When you go to the parts store tell them the front axle is....
(show us a pic to be sure) 1972+ k20 Dana44 or possible corp 10 bolt.

Rear axle is....
1973-87 K20 or C20 14 bolt (I think that's the range. You may need to show a pic of the drum to be sure.)

The safest thing to do is take in the old part with you. That way, you won't have to run back and forth and return stuff.

Sounds like you need to hang out in the 4x4 section...

And don't sweat the sheet metal stuff. You've got a good truck there!

ok i have a pic of the front axle and it has a hose coming out of it.. im guessing a breather...
it is 10 bolt... prob the corporate

what do you guys think sand blasting or soda on the frame? i imagine i will get it done instead of doing it my self cause i think it would be more costly to get all the stuff and try to do it.

also when i go to put something on the frame im thinkin..... UNDERCOATING!!! or bed liner would be a good choice!

Like old creek says above....the parts that don't match are upgrades. At least you have matching frame and cab.

i grew up 6 miles east of 148 and and about 2 miles south of 34

i wouldn't do any of the thick undercoating stuff. if you have it blasted, i wouldn't worry about soda for the frame. just have them use slag or whatever they recommend. i would have the frame powdercoated or use POR-15 paint.

also that front axle is from a 75-80ish K20 small hub dana 44. the rear is a 14bolt but unless the spring pads have been rewelded it came from C or K30.

ya i live in gravity now... i originally came from outside shenandoah ia.

i just want something that will hold up on the frame and last quiet a long time.
i know someone who does sandblasting in hopkins mo but i dont know who else does it around here i may have to do it myself and use sand, and i dont know anyone who does the powder coat or the por-15. bu thanks for the input!!!

and i was told the rear end was a corporate 14 bolt starting at 1973 and also told that front end was a corporate 10 bolt too... same year.

that por-15 looks like som real good stuff and i could do it all myself.. blasting and painting! thanks for the suggestion! i like it! prob better than undercoating what i was going to use!

You should be able to find S/N numbers and/or date codes on the top of the axle tubes. This should help you identify exactly what you are working with. The photo of the front diff looks like a dana44 to me but you really need to know the years to get correct parts. The brakes are simple but bearings and seals may be difficult since this stuff gets changed internally but looks the same. Good luck.

i agree with you guys and this is what i have come down to finding out what i got...

1970 chevy k20 cab and frame

1970 chevy 350 and 4 speed tranny WITH PTO

corporate 14 bolt rear end 1973 ish

dana 44 10 bolt front end 1973 ish

hey also im gonna buy the gas tank from LMC and relocate it does anyone got any pics of where it would come out? i was thinking if done right it would come out behind the licence plate like my dads 69 camaro? any thoughts or pic?

also am i going to have to but a lift on this to fit 33x12.50 tires without rubbing?

No problem.

33s will most likely fit. they may rub a little depending on the sag of your front springs. but only with the wheel turned and hitting a bump i would bet. and that also depends on what you use for a wheel. the orange truck in my avatar had 33-12.5 and a 2.5" lift and there was never any threat of the tires hitting the fenders. it was on Ford 16 inch steel wheels
