what the heck are all those wires for on my wiper motor/pump?

So I have a problem that when I depress the washer button, it turns the pump and won't turn off until I turn shut the ignition.

My first guess was that there was some kind of problem with the switch itself, but after thinking about it over a beer and removing the cover from the washer pump I'm beginning to think there's something a muck with the over-complicated pump mechanism!

That thing is like a Rube Goldberg machine!!!

So far I can figure that the bottom set of 3 wires controls the motor, I'm assuming that the 3rd wire has something to do with high and low speed, The middle set of 2 wires controls the solenoid that engages and disengages that little armature thingy for the pump, but..

what the heck is the top plug for??

I have 2 extra motor/pump assy's but I also scored an in-reservoir reservoir and pump from some old 70's ford that I found wrecked in the bush.

At this point it seems like the most hassle-free way to go would be to disable the OEM washer pump and wire up the ford pump.
Am I good to pull the solenoid leads and hook them directly to the ford pump?

Its winter time, and its damn scary when a semi passes you on the highway and your windshield turns into a wall of opaque sh*t!!

That will fix the non-functioning pump.

The top plug is part of engine wiring harness and is where power comes from/thru firewall

Re: what the heck are all those wires for on my wiper motor/pump?

so,

I left the lowermost (3 wires) harness plugged in (wiper motor power)
Unlplugged the middle harness (2 wire) pump solenoid
and unplugged the upper harness (3 wire I think)

with the top harness unplugged the wipers won't return to the down position on their own when the switch is turned off.

that solves that mystery.
