Can someone help me with a windshield change on a 71 Jimmy. I got the old one out. Bought a new rubber from LMC. Can't get the trim to stay in the rubber and can't get the rope to stay in the top channel of the rubber (top "dips" when the glass is stood up on bottom edge). What am I doing wrong? I think I saw on here one time that there are good windshield rubbers and there are better windshield rubbers. That may help the trim problem, but what about the rope problem?

The easiest way to put the windshield in is to call a auto glass company to do it for you. That is what i did, it took them a half a day to get it in and only cost me $110.00 including the price of the windshield. I bought the seal from lmc. But to see guys that do that type of thing everyday for a living fight with it for a few hours made me feel like i got my moneys worth.

I tried that. I had a glass installer here working on it for 2 - 3 hours. He finally left and said he'd be back after he checked with a friend to see what the trick to it was. I'm sure I'll never see him again. Someone here has to know how to do it. EVERYTHING is available on this site.

I feel your pain. I had the same issue with a local glass installer on mine. They ended up bringing 3 young guys out here to do it. They still couldn't get the stainless trim in correctly. A week later both side/lower pieces flew off at 65 mph, top piece stayed in there.

At some point I'll have to pull the windshield back out and find someone else to do it correctly, and now I need new stainless trim too. I've talked to a few installers since, and it seems only the old farts know how, and there aren't many of those guys left.

Just look for the right place. Find someone who has been around for a while. Look for an old shop and your bound to have some better luck.

It took a few guys several hours to get mine in they got it in and then realized the trim had to be in the gasket before the window. Take it out and do it again. As others have said if you know of someone/someplace local who does restorations on classic cars they usually have their own list of people. I got a to meet a few good people when I had my camaro restored. I only had them paint it but they did full restorations. They hooked me up with who they used for installing a vinyl top and installing all the glass. I never would have known about those people otherwise

If you brought the rubber from LMC then you have one made by Precision and is really good. What lubricant are you using to install the trim and rubber? I use foamy glass cleaner and it does wonders. I'm not sure if you have the seal all the way on the glass or are using a big enough rope. By saying the "top dips" are you saying the seal comes off the glass?

Heres a pic of how I like to install my rope. I leave a loop at the top to pull towards the corners.

The trim has to go on before you install the glass in the truck. You can use some masking tape to hold the trim and gasket in place; it will just tear as you pull the rope in. Just put a piece across the gasket and onto the glass on either side.

I use 3/16 or 1/4 inch solid braid nylon rope. For the 67-72 Chevy trucks, the way to put the windshield in is to start at the top. That will make it much easier to get the top corners in. You'll want a helper (or two) to do this. I also like to use foaming glass cleaner as a lubricant, because it doesn't leave the mess something like dish soap or WD-40 does.

The main mistake that most glass intallers make is starting at the bottom of the winshield. In these trucks, the installation needs to be started at the top first and finished at the bottom. It is easier to lay the glass down and start at the bottom, but getting those sharp corners in at the the top can be a problem.

Are you sure it's coming from the windshield? Blazers are notorious for leaking at the corner where the top meets the windshield frame. Drip deflectors in good shape with a generous bead of silicone under them help to reduce the problem.

When I install glass I do start from the bottom and have been successful everytime. Thats the reason for my loop on the top. When I set the windshield in the lower pinch I push down on the seal inside the cab at the middle 12 inches then start my rope. I pull the rope just around to the upper corners then I pull the upper section out to the corners. I use both sides to pull the corners in. I like it this way but maybe I'll try from the top next time to see how I like that one too.

Wish I had seen the video before I had the windshield re-installed in my Blazer. Hired a young glass guy and it took us several tries over a few days. He started at the bottom. We were both wringing wet wrestling with that thing for an hour and a half each time. Good info. Thanks.
