The ground wire for your sending unit only has to do with your fuel gauge, not fuel to the engine. Check to see if you have any kinked fuel lines and that they are connected properly to the fuel sender. If they look good I would use starting fluid to get the engine running and that will help prime the fuel pump. Good luck!

Re: what happends if?

Is your fuel pump in the gas tank or mounted on the engine?

Re: what happends if?

Then the engine should run if you have the fuel lines conected properly. Try the starting fluid and see if that primes the engine.

Re: what happends if?

You might try to keep it running with the starting fluid for 5 to 10 seconds. That should be enough time to get the air out of the lines. If that is not it then I would look at your connections again. If your fuel tank sender has two fuel hoses going to it could you have reversed them? One of them is a vent and the other is the supply for the fuel pump. If the nipples are two different sizes the larger one goes to the fuel pump and the smaller one is the vent.

Re: what happends if?

how many lines/sizes
1/4 return
5/16 vent
3/8 main feed
1/2 filler vent
my 79 Jimmy
you can syphon from the tank any where along it just has to be lower then the tank
so a tin can under the front even

Re: what happends if?

i would say that if you fill the bowls on the carb with gas from a bottle it should prime fine if the lines are right. stop useing strating fluid to get it going a spray bottle is all you need to feed it thro the carb air inlet or like i said fill the bowls. if your lines are backwords i think that the vent is right on top so you will never get any gas from it.

Re: what happends if?

if i have to put gas down the carb
I use a small plastic soft drink bottle with a screw on plastic cap
poke a small hole in the cap,and you can squeeze into the carb safely

Other than the fuel gauge intermittently nailing at 3:00. The truck should run without it. The sender needs the ground path to complete the gauge circuit.
You have a carburetor so it has nothing to do with fueling.

I'd check that the vent, feed, & return lines are connected to the correct sender lines.
