Can I change my socks?
The sock on the end of my gas sending unit was totally worn out so I just tore (actually it fell off). Right now I don't have a sock on the end but someone posted that this leads to terrible fuel pump problems. Is the sock replaceable? Will the metal ring the sock mounts to slide off or is it soldered or press fit? Will I have fuel pump problems without it? I haven't fired her up yet so was just checking first.
Thanks Solver

I have never ran one on any old vehicle I have ever owned...and never had a problem either. As long as you have a fuel filter, all should be fine.

Everyone would be happier if you changed your socks once in a while---left to right, right to left---inside out---you know the Al Bundy thing~~~~~~heheheh.
Anyway, the screen on the end of the tank outlet is there to minimze crap being sucked into the fuel system. Most trucks I have parted out either didn't have that screen--loose in the tank--or it was rotted away. Your inline fuel filter has MUCH smaller holes to protect the carb which is your main concern. I agree with Andy and would not worrry too much about it. Much bigger concern is the tank full of gas in the cab with you. One roll over on the drivers side and you are toast--well burnt!! Huck |

I usually run a filter between the tank and the metal line that leads to the fuel pump.I have never had a problem.

I always take the sock off of new sending units when I get them to go in a vehicle. I stick an inline filter after the sender before the pump though. This gives you that better filtration and helps your pump as well as helps your other filter. Just get the biggest one you can easily get that will fit somewhere before your pump. I wouldn't like running without *any* filter before the pump though, and I feel that the filter works better than that sock anyways.

PanelDeland, I used to place my fuel filter like that, but I have found out that this can actually cause...or agrevate vapor lock. (the boiling of fuel in your lines)
The best place to have your filter is between the pump and the carb. I can explain this to better detail later if you or anyone else wants me to. |

thanks guys thats what I needed to know!
I have a filter before the carb so I guess I should be good to go. I will finally get the old longhorn fired up this weekend. Got most of the front end back on this week. Just got to sand and paint the box. Then some new wood and some trim and some 8 hole wheels and a seat and------- It never ends.
