97 Sierra seat recline..HELP!

Hey everyone, i am having trouble with the driver seat in my 97 sierra extended cab, yesterday I went to recline my seat so I could get some stuff out of the back seat, and now my driver seat back rest will not latch. The back rest just goes back and forth freely now. I've done some research and I have a friend that works at a Chevy dealer and he told me there wasn't a recall for the 97 model, but it seems to be a fairly common problem from what I've read online. I can't find a way to fix it though! Any help would be very appreciated..

Re: 97 Sierra seat recline..HELP!

My bride was fussin' about the tilt wheel on our '98 ES300...saying it wouldn't latch at the lowest setting on tilt. I played with it and it worked okay. I'm thinking that (in her case) that the cold weather may have played a part in how well the bits and pieces move and are able to latch correctly.

Maybe that is the issue with yours.

Sound like the release is stuck in the open position. Did u pull the cover to see if something is stuck? That's where I'd start.

Thanks for all the replies, I haven't yet, just haven't had time. But I should be able to mess with it more tomorrow. I'll let y'all know what I found out. My passenger seat has done it before but it finally latched

Re: 97 Sierra seat recline..HELP!

I know the seats are different, but in the 88-94's there was a bolt that would shear in the left side of the driver's bucket seat back and it would just flop down freely. I got really good at replacing it about once a year in the parking lot. Also, the second row seat in my wife's Tahoe would have an issue, there would be a retainer on the end of a cable that just needed to be re-set.

It may be something similar or a cable/catch but you'll have to look inside to find out.
