This is my daily driver when im 16!

Ive been beggin my mom's dad (poppie) to give me his truck for about 3 years and this summer he finally gave it to me! Its a 1970 C20 Custom Camper and i love it! As you can see ive already done some work and found some rust haha. Some big ideas i got for it is changing the gears in the transmission to help it not be geared so low, but it runs great right now.

Wow that is a clean looking truck!

You may be better off changing the rear end, or the rear end gears. If it's "low" it's probably a 3.73 or 4.11 rear axle. Swapping to one with a 3.07 gear will help a lot, or, a more $ option is to keep the lower geared rear end and swap in an OD 5SPD manual or 700R automatic.

Re: This is my daily driver when im 16!

Cool! I got my '72 C20 when I was 16, as well, although that was 1986. Still have it, too. What's even cooler about yours is that it came from your grandpa.

Most of the 3/4 ton rear ends had the steep gearing. Mine is 4.57:1, so I feel your pain. Makes for a peppy truck around town, though

I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I believe getting something in the low 3's for rear end gearing would involve swapping in a 5 or 6 lug 1/2 ton rear end.

Ford used a Dana 61 8 lug with 3.07's and Dodge and Ford used Dana 71's with 3.07's.

Nice, keep it in the family. Looks like it still has split rims too.

Smile Re: This is my daily driver when im 16!

i have a little better cheaper way instead of you giving up your tow like truck run a bigger tire that will change the gear in the back of the rear end and you can still have it if you need to pull a trailer or go camping. 235/85/16 trust me you will love the feel and the tires are not that wide a little better on gas and in mt 1965 3/4 ton i have a 4.10 with a power glide trust me a 2 speed trans with a 4.10 gear is not fun if i'm running a 8.75 16.5 or 16 inch tire the max i can get it up to is 70 but its at 4000 RPM's.

Now with the 235/85/16 tires i can get my truck up to 95 mph and just cruise and i'm getting 13-14 mpg from my 10 mpg but that's only if i'm running new tires.I run the Mitchalin Rib tire the XCP tire they cost abou7t 1200.00 with road hazzerd but look them up on tire Rack they make others but these tires can get up to 5 year unlimited mileage last set i had i got 200,000 miles out of and they are able to be Re caped like the semi tires do they hold up to 3120 pounds per tire and ride like caddlacks

Re: This is my daily driver when im 16!

That's exactly what I drove when I was 16. It was our primary vehicle, it was new, and I loved it. Such great memories that I bought one to restore and enjoy now that I'm 60. You are going to love it too, just watch. Good luck and welcome!
