ill be darned, you can get a gas tank grommet on
just for the hell of it, i tried to put on the new grommet with out dropping the gas tank. all i did was put lots of greese on it and used a big flathead screwdriver. i was shocked when it went in.
this is the factory aux gas tank, not the main tank.. but, it might work with that one too... never tried. guess i got lucky for once!

It can be done on the main tank also, but it sure isn't fun!

I know someone posted before about using ky jelly, you can wash it away with water instead of using degreaser to clean it which will eat the rubber...

KY JELLY
I said it before---KY. No harsh chemicals to damage the rubber or the paint. Wash it off with mild soap & water. Hey, it is "slick". Don't be messing around with petro based products/grease. Some of that stuff will screw up a nice truck.

These grommets don't seem to good of quality anyway. I have one on my truck for almost a year now and it's full of small cracks. (no oil used to install-I used dish detergent) Probably have to replace it every other year by the looks of things.
They don't make 'em the way they used to.

Someone (I think Junkyard John) said he microwaved his to get it soft and then pushed it on with soap.

I got mine from ChevyDuty and it looked great when new too but not even a full year later, it has hundred (if not more) of small cracks in it.
