Oddest factory color combo yet!!

I just drug this 1972 Custom 10 in today. I've been doing this for years and I've never seen anything like this. What was the Atlanta assembly plant thinking?!?!

Re: Oddest factory color combo yet!!

According my 1972 Truck Data Book, this combination was not available as a RPO, but there is no special order number at the bottom of the SPID. Who knows??

One thing that's odd, is that the interior is really cracked and beat, but yet the SPID is in great shape. Makes me wonder if somebody printed out their own SPID as a joke? I've seen people do that before

when the engine isn't listed on the spid does that mean it came with a 307?

Yes, I believe that is correct (if it has an E in the VIN, as this one does, i.e. CC"E"). 350 and 402 would be called out as an RPO.

Not exactly, Think of it a special request not a special order. There were factory recommended color combinations that were intended to have broad public appeal. These are the charts in the order book. However you could order any stock exterior color with any stock interior trim color available for that trim level. A good example is the light yellow (grapefruit) with a green interior. I have seen several of these but they are an overide combination. The order sheet has a box for the exterior color code and one for the interior trim. Now when the order sheet is filled out there is a special instruction box that has to confirm the non-standard interior/exterior combination codes are correct and desired. In theory the order was to be returned for confirmation if there were no special instruction information. But we know how that goes, people are people. Bet more than a few typos slipped into the mix from both ends of the order process.

Correct, if an option engine is not listed on the SPID then the default engine for the model is correct. So for a 72 CE10 it would be a 307cid V-8

Re: Oddest factory color combo yet!!

I worked for a couple of Chevrolet dealers back in the early '70s and have seen some strange things, like green trucks with blue interiors. But never Hugger Orange with green. That's just too weird. I asked the new car sales manager about the green/blue combination, and he told me that this was some "computer" option that was sent out, unasked for. Hard to say where the truth is, on 40 year-old information. That truck did get sold, though.

Welcome to the board. With a history like that you will be popular. But the Longhorn (orange, was it Louie's) alone is intersting enough to me. How about posting a picture or two of your truck? Maybe as an introduction post. We love pictures here but any period pictures would be very welcome.

Re: Oddest factory color combo yet!!

There is a 73-87 running around my area that is awful, it even has a matching topper. I realize it doesn't apply to the proper years being discussed, but it is very ugly. I may just have to spy a couple of pics!

Re: Oddest factory color combo yet!!

Back in 1987 or so, one of my local Chevy dealers had an Astro passenger van that was light metallic blue with a garnet red interior. It was a stock order, sales manager screwed up. Needless to say, that van hung around the dealership for quite some time........

I'd be kinda cool to see someone do a resto on a plane-jane truck like this. It seems like every time one gets restored, it turns into a short wheel base Cheyenne.

Re: Oddest factory color combo yet!!

Here's some pics of a restored red/blue truck I saw at a show a couple years ago. I have to say the red or orange with green interior has to be the winner of all time ugly.

You know? A rare combo is one that is not that unusual at all. In fact,it is about as plain as you can get AND really not bad looking. Huh?...Oh,you want to know the combo, right? Well, how about White with Parchment interior? Yep White on White. How many have you seen?

Well I can think of five white trucks off the top of my head. Two are Cheyenne Super 30 Longhorns (one with buckets). One is a Longhorn 20 Blue Highlander. One is an C20 Eagle Blue Highlander. One is a loaded C10 Blue Highlander. Of these five only one is a white with white vinyl (as delivered). The others have a contrast trim cloth. As much as I love the white on white look, the ivory shade of the interior just looks a little dirty to most people against the true white exteriors.
