how to REset odometer to zero?

How does a person go about resetting an odometer back to zero?

its a pain in the butt. you take it all apart and after about 2 hrs of messing around with it, you'll finally figure it out.

it like a rubics cube.

if you have a gauge repair place in your town, you might drop it off and 45 bucks later pick it up..

Question If you were to hook a drill up to the end of speedo cable and run backwards would that roll it back,or is it just designed to go one way.....

You could always find a truck for sale with 25,000 original miles and ask the guy how he rolled the odometer back

I think the PO for my truck changed out the rear end, because hte speedo is way off (4.11 to 4.57 is my guess), and therefore the miles on the odometer aren't right either (higher than they should be). Dialing back the odometer is an interesting thought just to get mine accurate, but I dont' know how many miles were on it whan the rear was changed, so I guess that accuracy is probably not really possible.

Why does everyone want to go backward with the odometer? Just roll it forward to 0 again. You don't have to take a chance of breaking it by taking it apart that way. WES

cuz if you roll it backwards in your mind your thinking your taking miles off the truck where as if you go forward your putting miles on lol

If you do a frame up build or a total resto, why not have zero miles the first time you pull it out of the garage? But if you decide to put it on blocks and run it in reverse, dont end up like this!!

The thin plastic piece that is discussed in this thread is made out of a brittle material on purpose. It is almost impossible to disassemble the speedometer without breaking it. When I re-set mine to 0 miles in the Suburban (new crate motor) I also broke the plastic piece. I used a piece of a plastic container that a slip on seat cover came in. It was the correct thickness and was not brittle. I cut it oversize and put the broken pieces together laying on top of the new plastic. I then misted very a light coat of Grey, sandable automotive primer over the top of it. You have to have the paint can far enough away that it doesn't blow the pieces away but it made a perfect outline of the piece on the new plastic & made it easy to cut out.

I just have to ask..what's the purpose in rolling back the odometer? On the surface it seems a little dishonest. I know there must be a good reason. Adding a new motor doesn't account for the wear on the rest of the truck.

Since I am in rant mode this morning anyway I have to tell you a little story. A couple of years ago I bought a 1967 Chevy C-20. It was in pretty nice shape and the guy claimed it had 42,000 original miles on it. I told him I didn't think so because of some observations I had made on the overall condition of the truck. The truck was priced right for the condition it was in so I bought it anyway. All of the paperwork was in the glove box and and I was looking through it a couple of days later. In the back of the owners manual the original owner and kept a log of the work he had done to it. The truck had turned over 100,000 miles in 1983. I took the owners manual over to the guy I bought the truck from and he couldn't believe it. I see so many trucks (even some on here) that the owner claims are low milage when you can tell just from the pictures posted there is no way the original milage can be that low.

Moral of this story is It really doesn't make any difference what the speedometer says, you better know what you are looking at when you buy a supposedly low mileage 45 year old truck.

I don't believe any odometer that is 40 years old, much less any stories of original mileage. The truck's condition will speak for itself.

I personally believe an odometer that's 70-90k easier than one that is in the 10 to 40k range, as it almost certainly rolled over at one point. Also, most states exempt odometer mileage on the title for these older trucks.

All of my current vehicles started over at zero, as they received aftermarket gauge clusters when I redid the interior of each. Heck, the 68 K20 still says 2 miles as I haven't finished wiring it up a year after I installed the new drivetrain.

Easiest way is to roll it forward to zero or just take note of what the mileage is/was whenever a major update is performed.

Mine has rolled over twice that I know of. It shoes 75K on the clock but condition shows it's older.
It's kinda like dating a chick that has had work done. Unless it's maintained it doesn't last long.

I agree with the last four posts which takes me back to my original question. Why change it all? With that said, my frame off restomod Has a new Autometer speedo. I went thru the whole truck so it helps to track overall wear.

I set mine at zero just to make it easier for me to keep track of the mileage on the new crate motor. That way I don't have to try and keep track of a piece of paper that I wrote the mileage down on and stuck in the glove box, all I have to do is look at the odometer. It's just a convenience thing for me and I see nothing wrong with it...

My '70 Chevy pickup just turned over 100,000 miles and shows 384 miles on the odometer. Even though it is a really nice original truck, anyone that knows anything about these trucks at all would know different.

Just my 2¢ worth.

First step: Check your states laws governing odometer manipulation.

Second step: Decide it is not worth it.

I believe that Indiana state law states that if you change odometer that you must affix a metal plate that states the actual mileage when changed.

I do kinda wish these trucks had an odometer to read over 100k mine says 22k and i know its at least 120k but looking at the truck when i bought it id say it has more but the way it drives and all the steering parts suspension etc look 40 years old to me so idk it might only have 120k i guess ill never know my title said it had 96k when the po bought it he said he hardly drove it and i got it with 12k and my title now says exceeds mechanical limits which means over 100k

I fall on the side of the fence where all that matters is condition - be proud of your miles! Since nobody trusts original mileage claims anyway, especially when they are false, it's really not worth it. Plus, I don't want to break the odometer by trying to roll it back/forward, because if anyone would, I would. I will continue to roll my odometers forward the old fashioned way, with the tires (if I can ever get it off jack stands, that is...) Having said all that, I can understand why some folks want to roll em to zero after a total resto or a new engine install, etc. All personal preference, but for me, I like it when it's HIGH mileage (except when I'm buying one, of course..)
